Advantages: Wide availability, refreshing with a sweet taste but less calories than the original
Disadvantages: Can be quite bloating
Diet Coke is my safe choice of fizzy drink; it's refreshing, fizzy and reliable, and because it's so popular you're almost guaranteed to have it as an option in supermarkets, restaurants and pubs.
The first thing that comes to mind with Diet Coke is probably the advertising; firstly the elevator girls spying a hunky semi-naked guy, and more recently Duffy singing 'I gotta be me'. It' probably thanks to such successful and continual advertising that Diet Coke has become the well-known and highly popular drinks choice that it is today.
Diet Coke is, unsurprisingly, a diet version of Coke produced by Coca-Cola. It was released in 1982, and ever since has been at the forefront of drinks advertising and slogans. 'It's a diet coke thing' has evolved to the newer slogan now found on the cans which is 'Your light coke taste. Your low calorie lift'.
When comparing Diet Coke to the regular version, the difference is in the calories due to sugar content. Regular coke contains 42 calories per can, whereas the diet version contains 1; quite a big difference, especially if you drink these regularly. Don't be fooled though by the lack of sugar, Diet Coke can still be damaging to teeth.
Because of its popularity, Diet Coke is very easy to come across which is a huge benefit of liking it. To purchase it from shops, there are several sizes to choose from, including:
Individual regular size 300ml can 45-65p , 6 x 330ml can £3.65, 10 x 330ml can £2.69, 500ml bottle 97p, 2L bottle £1.56. There are often offers on Diet Coke that are worth looking out for, but as far as the cost goes, it's about average for a branded carbonated drink.
The design for diet coke tends to be silver, for example the cans now have an updated pretty silver design, so it's a brand that wants you to be proud to be seen drinking the product.
Drinking Diet Coke, in my opinion, is best from an ice-cold can. Once you open the ring pull and hear the fizz, see the water droplets down the side of the can, it's hard to resist! It's definitely something that needs to be cold to really enjoy it fully. Don't be put off if you've drank it from a bar before when it's served in a glass as some places seem to serve flat Diet Coke, so it's definitely worth trying a can if you haven't already.
There are variations on Diet Coke to cater for different tastes, such as cherry and lemon, though I prefer to stick to regular Diet Coke.
How does it taste? To be honest, I've been drinking Diet Coke instead of regular Coke for a few years now so I can't imagine ever going back to the regular version. To me, there's little difference except perhaps the regular version is slightly sweeter giving it a greater sense of fizzyness. That said, I find Diet Coke to be sweet enough for me and easy to drink, but it can be a bit bloating.
Diet Coke on its own tastes great, not too boring but not too flavoured so it wont put you off whatever you may be eating at the time. It makes a great mixer, and it's always an option at a bar or club. A JD and Diet Coke is my first choice of poison, which I would definitely recommend (though not at this very moment if you're at work or due to be driving!)
If you want something that's fizzy and refreshing without the calories, then Diet Coke is an excellent choice.
Summary: A classic & 'fashionable' drink
