Advantages: The butt of a lot of jokes?
Disadvantages: Artificial
Diet coke is a product I have drank on occasions, normally if i have been to someone's house and its all they have had in or if someone has ordered me a drink at the bar and assumed because i'm a size 6-8 I want a diet coke (oh no- very wrong).
I find it tastes artificial and more chemically than normal "full fat" coke. Full fat is a joke in itself as even "full fat" coke contains no fat. Full fat coke has er 100mls: 43 calories and 0g fat. Diet coke contains 0.5 calories and 0g fat per 100mls.
The ingredients for diet coke are: Carbonated Water , Colour (Caramel E150d) , Sweeteners (Aspartame, Acesulfame K) , Flavourings (including Caffeine) , Phosphoric Acid , Citric Acid , Preservative (E211). Aspartame is an artificial sweetner that has been rumoured to cause headaches and stomach pains as overconsumption of it can have laxative effects.
I'm not convinced by Diet coke as I saw a programme on BBC1 where they made a guy eat what he normally ate for a week in a controlled test but just drink 2 litres of diet drinks a day(including diet coke) for a week. He gained 4 lbs in weight. I have also read that diet drinks: as they contain artificial sweetners that your body does not know how to process, can make you gain weight as your body stores all the sweeteners up because it doesn't know what they are. Compared to the standard coke, that contains sugar- your body is used to sugar so knows what to do with it. This is something I believe in. There is also the "I'll have 2 Big Macs for me with fries, oh and a diet coke as i'm watching my figure" jokes. If you stand in Mcdonalds for long enough you will see this for yourself.
Just because it has the words "diet" on the can does not mean it will make you lose weight or that it is a "healthy" version of something you know is not "healthy" to start with. Personally, if I fancy a glass of coke, I always go for the Standard version. There is nothing as thirst quenching as normal coke, albeit a little heavy and sugar laden- but you will drink less normal coke than diet coke as the normal one is rich. I have worked with people who have claimed to have "diet coke addictions" and have drank up to 6 cans a day and have been unsuccessfully trying to lose weight. Its just not a good sign.
If you want a "healthy" version of Coca cola- have a glass of water or some fruit juice.
Summary: If you want a coke, buy a mini can of real coke
