Advantages: Refreshing, truly unique distinctive taste, hardly any calories at all!
Disadvantages: Aspartame might bother some, not as good at room temperature
I am such a Diet Coke addict that my friends have been bugging me about writing a review on this wonderful product since long- so here goes.
I love Diet Coke. I love the taste and the smell, and the extraordinarily wonderful feeling of icy cold diet coke trickling down your throat on a hot summer's day. For those of you who are not familiar with this particular product, diet coke is actually the sugar-free version of coca-cola. It contains aspartame (fake sweetener) instead of sugar, and can is therefore internationally recognized as a perfectly harmless drink for diets and diabetics on the calorie scale. There has been some controversy about whether the presence of aspartame in the drink is cancerous or not, but since I am not familiar with this issue, I cannot really comment on that.
The bottle has the exact same shape and height as the traditional Coca-Cola bottle but it can easily be distinguished through the logo that circles the bottle: In opposition to the original Coca-Cola, this one does not have a red and black banner around it. In fact, the traditional white-and-black logo of Diet Coke has really become one of the trademarks of this drink. The banner contains the typical ingredients and nutritional info. The main ingredients are:
* Carbonated Water
* Caramel Color
* Aspartame
It also claims to contain only 1 calorie and 0.1g carbohydrate per serving (1 can). I find this perfectly suited for me because with the number of Diet Cokes that I drink per day, it would have been quite awful had the calorie/carbohydrate count been higher!
Some of my friends have claimed that Diet Coke is not as fizzy as the original Coke but I personally find both of them perfectly alike in terms of fizziness! However, I do have to agree that there is quite a noticeable difference with the taste. While I would rather say that Coke has quite a sweet, caramel like taste to it, Diet Coke is more tangy in flavor. I noticed that instead of the caramel-like sweetness, Diet Coke is more subtle on the sweet side, and has an extremely small touch of bitterness as a slight aftertaste. I personally found that this very, very slight aftertaste is much less pronounced when drank cold.
The few times where I tried having it without letting it chill overnight, I found that the aftertaste was quite strong. Which is why I absolutely recommend everyone to chill your bottles before opening. A note for those who cannot stand aspartame or other artificial sweeteners: You probably won't like diet coke because I personally attribute the small aftertaste to the high presence of aspartame in the drink. I think that aspartame has quite a distinctive taste to it that differentiates from sugar, and this is quite noticeable in this drink.
I have also noticed that there is a sort of sweet-sour taste to this version of coke when the first sips enter your mouth. After a couple more sips the sweet-sour taste is much less noticeable and I believe that this is simply due to the taste buds getting used to it. Once more, this taste is practically non existent when it is drunk ice cold. In fact, when I have a bottle of extremely cold Diet Coke, the only taste that I get is the tangy flavor and the sensation of bubbles buzzing down the throat. I have to say that this is quite refreshing and energy-inspiring; probably not in terms of nutritional content because it contains nothing that sustains energy, but I always tell my friends that Diet Cokes gives me this extra boost due to the way that this amazingly refreshing drink manipulates my mental state. It is really so, so refreshing that you immediately bounce back on your feet after drinking this!
I also don't know why but once you open the bottle and leave it to stand, the bubbles tend to die quicker than regular Coke. Don't get me wrong, it does have the same amount of fizz and bubbles, but Diet Coke tends to get flat quicker than regular Coca-Cola. But I still love Diet Coke because of the simple fact that it manages to give me the same refreshed feeling as Coke, minus the huge number of sugar and calories! I personally am not overly fond of drinking water and Diet Coke therefore suits me just fine.
I would however, caution pregnant women to be cautious with drinking Diet Coke- while I don't know much about it, I have heard that aspartame is not really suitable for pregnant or breast-feeding mothers. I cannot claim that this is true, but a little precaution might go a long way!
Overall, I would recommend this drink to you: Chilled, served in a tall glass, or straight out of the bottle/can, I have never ever tasted anything more refreshing and less fattening!
Thanks for reading!
Summary: There's nothing like a good chilled diet coke
