Advantages: low cal, no fat, healty alternative

Disadvantages: taste for me...

As today we had what my wife considered to be an unhealthy lunch (see other review) I decided to counteract the calories and fat we had ingested and chose a "light" drink to go with it. So off the shelves a bottle of Diet Coke was selected.

Im sure the majority of readers will be aware that Diet Coke is from the Coca Cola family and is advertised on the television with a hunky chap taking his top off and taking a long drink from an open can much to the delight of some watching females. Presumably this is to make the viewer think that by drinking this product you will stay trim and attractive to the opposite sex...?

Fat free and sugar free a 500ml bottle will only provide you with 2 kcals and 0.02g of salt so you certainly wont get fat by drinking it! It is described as being a low calorie soft drink with vegetable extracts with sweetners. The ingredients reveal nothing startling other than its inclusion of sweetners including Aspartame and Acesulfame K so this may be of concern to those who have a reaction to artifical sweetner.

The colour as you are probably aware is a dark, black liquid which when you open the bottle fizzes up. Fizzy is an understatement when it comes to Diet Coke, the gentlest shake or nudge before opening the bottle will result in a coke explosion, so do be careful when attempting to open.

All that aside, how does it taste? To be honest, its not my favourite of drinks, the sweetners taste very artificial and after a few sips I always end up feeling bloated. The colder the drink, the better it tastes to me, and because of the extreme fizziness I find that the drink does go flat after a while which makes the taste less appetising.

I understand the plus points for drinking this, low cal, no fat etc but for me I only drink this if my wife buys it, I can never manage a whole bottle because of the bloatiness I feel after a while and to me it does leave an unpleasent after-taste.

Typical for me I prefer the full fat/full sugar version but only drink that in moderation. Credit though to Coca Cola for actually bringing out a healthier alternative, it just isnt for me really.

Diet Coke can be found practically anywhere, from local shops, supermarkets, vending machines, petrol stations etc. Prices vary dramatically but averages out at around 99p for a 500ml bottle.

3/5 from me, ok if you're feeling thirsty and need a drink asap, but I would choose other alternatives if the decision was left to me.

Summary: thanks for reading

I prefer the "proper" version too: the diet one seems to taste more of the can than anything else!

(You've got "your" for "you're" near the end, btw.)
