Diet Coke - Marymoose's favourite soft drink!
Member Name: marymoose
Advantages: Taste, best Diet Cola drink EVER
Disadvantages: Cost (although can be found in special offers)
I find it hard to believe that I haven't yet reviewed Diet Coke, since it is my favourite drink in the world, and has been for YEARS. Well, soft drink anyway!
Personally I can't stand full-fat coke, although I liked it as a child (and didn't like Diet Coke then - funny how tastes change). It's not just the thought of the amount of sugar in it, it's the taste (probably this explains why I don't like Coca Cola Zero either), and I always feel like it's rotting my teeth there and then (mind you, I'm aware that Diet drinks aren't that great for teeth either, but I'm not here to debate that. At 31 I'm happy to say that I have no fillings (aside from the one due to a drunken accident, probably following vodka and Diet Coke!) , but then I don't drink copious amounts of fizzy drinks. For me they are mostly a treat!
---Can or Bottle?---
Personally I feel that Diet Coke tastes best out of a can straight from the fridge (the can says best served ice cold on it) which is what I'm doing while writing this review - cans were on special offer!) Of course this isn't usually the most cost effective way of drinking it. I tend to buy 2 litre bottles of Diet Coke if I'm going to use as a mixer or if I think I'm going to drink a lot, and these I tend to keep in the fridge, and then serve with ice too if I have some.
That said though I don't mind Diet Coke from a non chilled bottle, and that's how I tend to drink it when I stay with my parents - my mum always gets me in a couple of bottles when I go to stay.
---It goes with everything!---
If I'm out and about then 99% of the time I will order Diet Coke if I'm having a soft drink. Obviously it's not always Diet Coke that you get, that will depend on whether the establishment has a deal with Coca Cola or Pepsi. To be honest I'm not that bothered, as it never tastes the same when it's on draught anyway. I ALWAYS have Diet Coke with McDonalds...and I have to say it irritates me when people criticise people ordering Diet drinks with fast food - I order Diet Coke because I don't like full-fat coke - so there!
Of course Diet Coke isn't just to be used as a soft drink - it is perfect as a mixer with vodka, whiskey, brandy, rum, and Malibu (among others). If you're buying an expensive single malt then you're most likely not going to want to waste it by mixing it with Diet Coke. However, it goes well with cheaper drinks, and I have to say that it makes cheaper vodka and whisky taste better! A double vodka and Diet Coke is one of my drinks of choice, and even better with a slice of lemon in it. I love the addition of lemon (whether with alcohol or not)- I think that's why I particularly liked Diet Coke with Lemon when that was widely available - they currently seem to only do a Citrus Zest version which I think is different.
If you drink a lot of Diet Coke (or any Coca Cola drinks) it's worth signing up to Coke Zone (www.cokezone.co.uk) and saving up for rewards. Bottles (large and the small 500ml 'on-the-go' bottles) have a code on them which you type in (although sometimes they can be quite hard to read and they don't register), and cans (although not multipack cans) have a code on their ring pull. I have to say that I often forget about this, and therefore it's going to take me even longer to save up for a Diet Coke T-shirt which I have wanted for years!
---What's in it? And the taste!---
Diet Coke contains carbonated water, colour, sweeteners (including aspartame which I think some people object to), flavourings (including caffeine), phosphoric acid, citric acid. It contains a source of Phenylalanine.
The best bit is that a 330ml can contains just 1Calorie. Personally since I don't drink a lot of Diet Coke, I do see it as a treat, and an almost calorie free treat is fantastic!
I like that it has caffeine in it, as it perks me up. However there is a caffeine free version - I don't really think it's that great as it goes flat VERY quickly.
I don't know how to explain the taste of Diet Coke (and really I'd be very surprised if anyone reading this hasn't tried it)...it's different from any other Cola. It's the perfect sweetness (not sickly sweet like full-fat coke) and fizziness. I don't find it as gassy as some other colas and it doesn't leave me burping!
I LOVE Diet Coke. However, due to its cost I tend not to buy it often, as I find that Pepsi Max is usually cheaper. For instance the other week in my local shop I could get a 2 litre bottle of Diet Coke for £1.99 or two 2 litre bottles of Pepsi Max for £2!
However, the other day in the Tesco Express near my parents' it was 2 bottles of Diet Coke for £2 which I was very happy about.
An 8 pack of cans usually costs between £3 and £4.50 and a box of 24 for about £10. For an individual can you can sometimes pay up to £1 - however, in some shops you can buy 4 single cans for £1! There are many different pack sizes as well.
I could go on and on, but I won't and will just say keep your eyes open for special offers and stock up then!
Summary: I love it because I love it- not because I'm on a diet!
