Advantages: smells gorgeous
Disadvantages: tastes weak and watery
As a coffee lover, I'm always looking out for new products. So when I spotted Douwe Egberts Instant Mocha Coffee, I knew I needed to try it. I love Mocha Coffee and not having a proper coffee machine, I was chuffed to find it in an instant powder. Douwe Egberts instant Mocha coffee cost just under £3.00. Each packet makes up to 16 cups. The description on the packet is "smooth frothy coffee with a hint of chocolate" and "a rich smooth Mocha Coffee for you to enjoy any time of the day". The instructions on the back of the packet say: "1. Spoon 5 heaped teaspoons into a medium sized cup. Add one more for a mug 2. Add a little cold water and mix to a paste with a spoon to achieve a frothier coffee. 3. Pour on hot (not boiling) water and stir" After following these instructions to a tee, I couldn't wait to taste my mocha. The aroma wafting up from the cup was gorgeous. Unfortunately even though I did what it said on the packet, I couldn't get a decent froth thing going on. I tasted the drink and oh my god, it was gross. It was really watery and weak and didn't taste as mocha-ish as the smell suggested. I ended up tipping it down the sink. Determined not to have wasted money on this, I tried it made with hot milk. It did taste slightly better but still not worth the money. Douwe Egberts have such a good reputation for coffee-making but they've really let themselves down with this product. After the amount of spoonfuls of powder you had to use to make the coffee, I thought it was going to be strong in flavour and yummy in taste. It turned out to be an utter disappointment. I'm going stick to coffee shop mochas from now on and I suggest you do to.

- 01/10/02 Hiya and welcome to DooYoo - sounds like my idea of hell. Instant coffee is evil anyway!
I would like to have heard a little more about the product really, ingrediants would be a good place to start - I know someone who's allergic to sweetener and another couple of people who don't ingest it at all - what makes it sweet?
If you want an 'instant mocha' I'd suggest making a milky coffee with a spoonful of hot chocolate in it! ;o)

- 01/10/02 That's such a shame - their regular coffee is really nice. Oh well, I'll know to avoid this one anyway! |
