Duchesse de Bourgogne ... casks; smooth with a rich texture and interplay of passion fruit, and chocolate, and a long, dry and acidic finish. After the first and secondary fermentation, the beer goes for maturation into the oak barrels for 18 months. The final product is a blend of younger 8 months old beer with 18 months old beer. The average age of the Duchesse de Bourgogne before being bottled is 12 months.

... the unique and sensational Rodenbach Grand Cru. The most accomplished pretender to the crown is Verhaeghe. Duchesse de Bourgogne is their sweeter more elegant beer. The drier, slightly more traditional Vichtenaar is usually only found in Belgium. When I am trying to lure people into getting the Belgian beer thing, I often aim red wine drinkers at Duchesse, Rodenbach and Vichtenaar. They seem to "get" the oak ageing immediately and then grow into the beeriness....more

Premium Review Duchesse de Bourgogne: A seriously classy act (187 words)

The Verhaeghe family brewery at Vichte, near Kortrijk in West Flanders (Belgium) is as higgledy-piggledy an affair as you will find anywhere. As sales grew, each generation added another building without bothering to check whether the heights of the floors matched - so knocking a door through fropm one brewery building to another is a laugh. For centuries the fame of Flemish beer rested on tangy, sourish brown ales that had be stored in oak casks for a year or two before being either blended with fresher beer or else packaged "neat". The most famous such brewery is Rodenbach, makers of the unique and sensational Rodenbach Grand Cru. ...  Read the complete review

(And knowing me, I'm sure I'll find more than enough to say about any product - large or small!) I also guess you're all wondering how I would come across a beer that impressed me so much as to want to review ...  Read the complete review

For the next of my beer reviews I am moving on to another excellent Belgian beer that I sampled at Chesterfield Beer Festival. This is another of my favourites and one that I have since sampled many times, both in Belgium and in the UK. I love Duchesse de Bourgogne and would like to introduce this lovely lady to you! ~~~THE BREWERY. The Duchesse is brewed at the Verhaeghe Brewery which is based in the Flemish town of Vichte. The brewery dates from the end of the 19th Century and they pride themselves on using traditional methods to produce their beers. Their motto is “Better less But Better” ~ not got a clue what it means though I’m ...  Read the complete review
