Advantages: Decent taste, the tangyness is cool, a well designed bottle
Disadvantages: I'm not a fan of Orange
Morrison's is across the road from work, so as a result their offers are quickly seen and often accepted, especially this one where they are selling 2 bottles of branded "pop" for £1.60. These include Dr Pepper, Coca-cola, Lilt, Sprite, 7-up and Fanta, each coming in 500ml bottles. Today was the day of the orange stuff so Fanta was up to the batters plate and was readying it's self to be reviewed.
Fanta is a wonderful orange colour, bright and vibrant, initially this was thought by myself to be down to E Numbers, however it turns out that as the product uses both Pumpkin and Carrot extracts that the colour is quite probably down to the "assistance" of these and the real orange juice used in the product obviously.
The bottle is a see through plastic container with a sort of warped "egg timer" shape, that's oddly ergonomic and with the added "grip" bumps the bottle is one of the best bottles to actually drink out of, making the use of it a pleasure compared to the more "normal" coke bottles which in sweaty hands can feel like their about to be dropped. The bottles is adorned with an orange lid and a matching label. The label having the now common information regarding nutritional values, ingredients and the such, as well as the drinks name and details on the bottling work, which in the UK is done by coca-cola.
So enough of what it looks like, we don't buy drinks for the aesthetic attributes, that's the job of pictures drawn by famous artists. We obviously by drinks to quench our thirst, our need to provide our body with liquid...when it comes to fizzy drinks, usually the flavour and taste. Upon opening the Fanta bottle there was a slight hiss, not the volcanic like explosion of juice that can happen with Coke and Pepsi, just a little hiss, a controlled sound. Then a smell, a strong orange that could be smelt a few inches from the bottle, a lovely odour that set the tone of the drink. A strong orange with a sweet little kick in the under belly.
A mouthful is always the true test of flavour and taste and the drink passes the test with a really standard, a strong but yet not bitter taste in fact really quite sweet and full blooded taste that is really pleasant. The flavour tickles the tongue immediately and continues to do so for a few seconds after the juice has been swallowed, which is quite a bizarre sensation to be frankly honest. Despite the tingle on the tongue, the drink doesn't have the often repulsive sense of giving you a mouthful of bubbles, neither does is give you the over the top liveliness that makes the juice attempt a get away through your nose. What's actually really good here is the drink has 9% less of your GDA sugar than either Dr Pepper or Ribena, so it could well be argued as being better for your teeth than either of them.
Now onto the negatives, not everyone is a fan of orange juice in fact the poor reviewer here, dislikes fizzy orange juice on the whole, despite accepting it tastes good, I wouldn't be going out and getting another any time soon. The fizzy orange always seems wrong and not quite as nice as the cordials or infact as good as a satsuma to be honest. So for this reason the drinks not one of the top fizzy drinks for me, no particular flaw with the product just personal opinion.
Notes:
The drink contains a source of phenylalanine, which I have no idea about but it's on the bottle so it must mean something to someone.
There's over 70 variety's world wide and the drink was only the second to be marketed by the Coca-Cola company (Coca Cola being the first)
UK ingredients:
Carbonated water, sugar (from beet and/or cane), orange fruit from concentrate (5%), citric acid, vegetable extracts (carrot, pumpkin), preservative (potassium sorbate), natural flavourings, sweeteners (sodium saccharin, aspartame), acidity regulator (sodium citrate)
Summary: Orangey drink

- 26/07/09 I've yet to find a fizzy orange drink that I actually enjoy, although Fanta is fairly passable in an emergency! |
