Advantages: Crisp , Smooth, Easy to drink
Disadvantages: A bit too easy to drink...hic!
Pre-ramble
“Beer, beer, Smurfing beer, You don’t get drunk and it isn’t dear.”
Yes I remember singing along to this with the Smurfs back in their heyday of the late 70s. Although it seemed like a good idea at the time, “Smurfing Beer” is probably not quite what the public would demand these days. No, we like our beer to get us tipsy and we will pay a reasonable amount of money for the pleasure!
Anyway apart from that little aside, (interesting though it was) I must start writing this review.
I am going to put my thoughts down about Fosters Ice, even though I don’t see it around that much these days, which is a shame as it has been one of my favourite lager beers.
The beer itself
Fosters Ice is reasonably strong lager, 5% I believe and it’s main selling point is its crisp taste produced by the ice filtering process (or something like that) that the beer goes through during production.
This lager will set you back about £1.10 from a decent Off Licence. Well that is what I last paid for one, but seeing as I haven’t seen them around for a while that price might have gone up a bit!! I would say that it is probably slightly more expensive than a standard bottle of lager, but still not exactly pricey.
What do you get for your money then? Well first of all you get is a nice clear bottle that could actually come in handy after you have finished your beer…Perhaps you might like to take up the interesting and rewarding hobby of ship-in-a-bottle modeling? This bottle would be perfect for that! However I’m guessing many of you might not be interested in ship-in-a-bottle modeling at all so I had better get on with the rest of my review!
The label on the bottle is quite funky looking with “Fosters Ice” emblazoned across the front in large cartoon-y style letters and I believe that there might even be a kangaroo on there somewhere? There usually is on Foster’s products just to remind you of course, that they are Australian!
Well then moving onto the appearance of the beer then. Well it is quite light brown in colour, a bit lighter than a normal Fosters lager I think. Perhaps this is something to do with the ice filtering process?
Anyway it looks rather appetising as it sits there staring at you from behind the glass, a bit like a goldfish does when it stares at you from its bowl. Only this is a lager so it doesn’t really look that much like a goldfish, unless you could get a goldfish that existed in a liquid form, that resembled beer. I’m rambling aren’t it? Yes thought so! Anyway the Foster Ice sits there patiently waiting, sealed in its transparent prison, urging you to set it free and drink it!
Test Drive
You will need to put this lager in the fridge for a while as it is obviously best enjoyed when chilled. This is of course what I did the last time I had one, and then I drank it. So how does this Fosters Ice taste? Well crisp is a word I would use. It certainly has a slightly different taste than a normal Fosters lager, definitely smoother and a bit less of a bitter aftertaste to it. It might seem strange to describe a lager as sweet tasting but in comparison to something like a Beck’s (another beer that I am a fan of), this Fosters Ice is definitely sweeter tasting to the pallet.
This is a very easy lager to drink and so you may not realise quite how quickly you can get through them! This of course can lead to a rather intoxicating effect, which I’m sure the Smurfs would not have approved of! Then again that is probably what you were after in the first place and so in that case you may as well buy another and make merry!
Conclusion
So in conclusion then, in my opinion, this is a pleasant tasting beer that is easy to drink and does not cost the earth to buy. I would recommend this to you fans of lager out there who appreciate a nice smooth brew!
Thanks for reading!
