Advantages: Good refreshing taste
Disadvantages: a warm one is awful!
Fosters lager - immortalised by Australian comic book character Barry McKenzie has proved to be one of Australia's greatest exports. Generally Fosters is one of the cheapest lagers to buy in the shops. At my local shop it generally retails at around three pounds for a pack of four.
Fosters is much derided by some people who write it off as a cheap lager that tastes of urine. In fact, on a hot day like we have had recently it goes down really well - especially when you've got the barbeque going.
Fosters comes in at a not too bad 4.9% and is advertised as 'The Amber Nectar'. Fosters website reckon that thirty pints are drunk every second in the UK. In fact, the majority of that number seem to be drunk in my local Spoons. Some pubs also offer Fosters Extra Cold, which is nice. I would really avoid 'Fosters Twist' though - it was their answer to San Miguel and Sol lagers with a hint of liume. It really is quite disgusting!
The taste is good, a crisp refreshing beer that is much better when ice cold. A warm can of Fosters is pretty nasty - so avoid that if possible. I highly recommend buying a portable cooler when at the beach or doing an outside barbeque. In terms of its competition, Carling and Stella, I prefer Fosters overall. Carling has a nasty aftertaste I find and Stella is just unnatural tasting.
On the whole, Fosters is a nice lager, not too expensive and refreshing on a nice day.
Summary: A nice lager

- 07/07/09 Yeah Stella is revolting. And its true what they say about it making people aggressive. I certainly feel that way after a few of them!. |
