I love nothing better than a nice beer . If I have the finances, I like to get a selection of real ales and savour them. However, bottled real ales can be expensive, whereas lager can often be found on some very reasonable offers at the supermarket - at the moment Asda are selling this at 2 cases of 15 cans for £16 , making each can 53 and a bit pence .
Certainly a lot cheaper than I'd pay for a pint in a pub, so I decided I'd grab a case of Fosters, and a case of Strongbow (there are a varity of drinks included in this offer) .
Although Fosters is billed as an Australian lager, the stuff you'll get in the supermarket is actually brewed in the UK, by the Scottish Courage brewing company . However, it claims to still stay true to the original Aussie recipe - I'll just have to take their word for it!
It comes in a distinctive blue, red, and gold can, which is colourful enough to stand out amongst all the other brands on the shelf. You can of course buy it in bottles too, or on draught in a pub . However, for me, it has to be the ice cold can straight out of the fridge. Sadly, my fridge is currently broken, so my lovely neighbours have been chilling a few cans for me on days when I feel I might want them in the evening!
The lager itself is a lovely amber colour, and when poiured into a glass produces a decent head . I'll be honest, I'm a bit of a slob and tend to drink it right out of the tin . It's cold and wet and certainly quenches my thirst, going right to the spot, and it goes down like a dream - on especially hot days I've been known to finish a can in a few gulps. The bubbles in it make it lively on the tongue too . It is just a lager though, and flavour wise it just doesn't match up to a good real ale - but for refreshment, it works like a dream .
It's only 4%, so a couple of cans isn't going to give you too many problems, but as with any drink, too much can leave you with a nasty hangover . I usually only drink a couple of cans at once - just to take the edge of a hot or tiring day.
Would I recommend this ? Well, on a hot summers day with the sun beating down on you and a barbecue going, a cold can of lager is just the ticket, and Fosters is more than up to quenching your thirst, cooling you down, and getting you drunk if thats what you're aiming for .
But for a nice enjoyable complex flavoured drink, on a cooler day, it still has to be a good real ale for me.
4 stars!

- 16/09/09 Can't say I enjoy Foster's myself but I do know a lot that do! Whether it's because usually quite cheap or not I don't know! |

- 08/09/09 I like a nice cool beer from time to time too and Fosters in a can is lovely. However on tap it can be severly affected resulting in dullness and not much taste. |
