Advantages: goes down great, best from draught, a really refreshing lager

Disadvantages: none I can think of

Let me get one thing straight - I’m no Beer expert. There are those Real Ale Buffs who can cite the ‘original gravity’ and the type of hops used to brew that certain beer – plus the history of the micro brewery that it comes from. There are other who can tell you what strength a certain beer or lager is etc etc.

Sorry, that’s not me.

I go on what I fancy. If it tastes good and really ‘hits the spot’ that’s for me! And as far as I’m concerned nothing hits MY Spot better than the Amber nectar – Foster Lager (apart from Fosters Ice, if course, but that’s another story and another op).

There are days when only the best will do. You’ve had a busy day. It’s warm. You’re thirsty. Let’s face it, your throat feels like the inside of a dingo’s ball sack. You toddle off to your nearest friendly hostelry (or Pub, for any 'Orstrains' reading this) and they offer you a huge range of designer beers, then there are the draft beers on offer. From the plain and simple, lagers, bitters etc to the quaint and peculiar “Old Stoats throatgobbler – This week’s Real Ale”. But then, a friendly blue and gold sign enters into your peripheral vision. “Aha, they do Fosters”.

You’ve struck gold!

“Reassuringly expensive” say the adverts for Stella Artois. If that’s the case then Fosters should try “Undeniably Thirstquenching”. It comes from the land down under and is most definitely ‘fair dinkum’.

I must say that although I enjoy an occasional can of Fosters, I much prefer it, in a Pub, from draught. There is just something that you can’t beat. Like I said – it REALLY Hits the spot.

Pricewise, Fosters can often be a bit of a bargain. Hunt out a Wetherspoons pub, for example, and you can pick up a cold, thirstquenching pint for aroun
d £1.60. In more trendy or ‘clubby’ type establishments you may have to pay ‘through the nose’ – but you’d probably find that in those places, everything is pricey.

I said I would not go into much info on the technical side of the lager. Well, lets face it – it’s lager, it’s cold, it’s ....a drink. But regular Fosters in UK Pubs is 4% alcohol as opposed to the ‘export’ variety sold on your foreign hols which is slightly stronger (unless it’s that club in Ibiza that charges you 1500 ptas and waters it down!) at 5% vol. Same goes for the Fosters Export that you can bring back when you’ve been at the duty frees.

So go on, Give your tastebuds a treat – forget that real ale “Snottnasty's Pervy” or Irish Guinness-ish “Mulligan’s Creamy”, ignore the latest ‘designer beer’ fresh from downtown San Diego (via Belgium) “Beckweiser” and don’t even bother with the new alcopop “Hooters Beach” (although it sounds like a place well worth a visit) – try a taste of Aussie’s Amber nectar and make it a pint of Fosters.

And while you’re going.... you can fill my glass up too!

FOOTNOTE (Well not quite a foot, but nearly 11 inches!) - Esteemed dooyooer Jill Murphy has taken me to task - in the nicest possible way - for not mentioning the taste. It tastes like LAGER....FOSTERS Lager, actually. Smooth, cool and refreshing. But please don't ask whether it's hoppy or nutty or something - I dunno. It tastes GOOD or maybe an Aussie might say "BONZER!"

By the way - anyone interested, the 11 inches?...nope NOT ME!

i'm not a lager drinker myself any more after moving onto bitter and finer ales (yes sorry i'm the conoisseur type nowadays!) but lager-wise foster's is my fave - i've spent many a night with it on the field by my house!

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one as I am a reassuringly expensive type of gal!
