Advantages: Delicious taste, particularly Chocolate Fudge Brownie...
Disadvantages: A little too thick for my liking...
I'm going to begin my review in the most unconventional of means by comparing Frijj milkshakes to, of all things, Guinness.
Yes, in much the same way as Guinness is frequently referred to as a "food", I must also think of Frijj milkshakes the same way. After drinking a standard size carton of Frijj, I am always full up, and sometimes even a little bloated. I don't particularly like my drinks to fill me up in this fashion (hence why I rarely drink Guinness), but this aside, they are very flavoursome, delicious milkshakes.
I must admit that I was initially drawn to them after my corner shop at Uni stopped selling Yazoo, for some baffling reason (which I think is a far lighter drink, and therefore more appetising). Nevertheless, I'm a fan of the sheer range of milkshakes they offer, and you certainly get your money's worth with the drink! Let's take a look at the score sheet:
- Made with fresh milk
- Rich in calcium
- Astoundingly, less than 3% fat
- Veggie safe
- Gluten free
Nutritional Info (per 100ml):
367kj energy
3.6g protein
13.4g carbohydrate
2.1g fat
126mg calcium (16% rda)
How this drink has only 3% has baffled me since the second I had a peek at the nutritional information. Despite "thick" and filling milkshakes not being always to my preference, the sheer taste explosion you will experience when drinking this makes that statistic astounding. Nothing this low in fat should taste this good, although there's obviously going to be a fair amount of sugar dumped in there for good measure.
Although the Chocolate, Banana and Strawberry flavours are constants, Frijj also constantly introduce new weird and wonderful iterations tentatively, such as Cookie Dough and the wonderful Chocolate Fudge Brownie, both of which normally sports characters from The Simpsons on. My only real complaint is that some of them can be a challenge to find - a version called "Vanillaaaaarghh", which was a big hit at Halloween, is still manufactured by Frijj but can be a problem to find, and judging by my experience with my local stores - Tesco, One Stop, Asda etc - it is very much dependent on a combination of luck and your location in the country as to which flavour and stock you get near you. I recently saw lots of Cookie Dough in the shops near me, whilst my friends up North have had them for months!
Having tried the "big three", as well as the Chocolate Fudge and Cookie Dough flavours, I would assert that the Chocolate Fudge Brownie is my favourite. The flavours are very vivid, and whilst a lot of milkshakes drinks just approximate the taste of what's on the label, it really does feel like they just blended a few brownies up and poured them in a carton!
If you like "thick" milkshakes that basically substitute food, then these are for you - the taste of each is very fulfilled and delicious. However, if you like the lightness of something like Yazoo, then this might be just a little too filling. Still, I do find that I can make a carton last a long time whilst watching a film or something!
This is my first review of a bit of food or drink, so I hope it didn't ramble too much! Thanks!
Summary: If you like thick milkshakes, it's lovely.
