Advantages: Tastes lovely, quite filling for a drink

Disadvantages: The calorie content, could be chocolatier!

Never go shopping on an empty stomach, isn't that what they say? Otherwise you'll end up spending way more than you mean to on frivolous sweets and snacks just because your rumbling stomach demands them. This is what happened to me last night on a grocery shop in Tesco straight from work, and this is how a bottle of Galaxy Thick Shake ended up in my basket. In my defence, it WAS on offer for £1 (normally £1.50ish) and it DID tide me over til tea time!

I'd never even heard of these shakes before I spotted them in the supermarket so I had no idea what to expect. They come in a 440ml white plastic bottle with a swirly, chocolaty Galaxy-type label featuring a large G and an image of two squares of the chocolate. "20% more Chocolate" it proclaims, and "2.5% fat". It has a brown screw top and underneath that is foil sealed.

Chocolate is probably my least favourite of the usual milkshake flavours, I think this is because the grittiness that can often come with it. There is none of that however with the Galaxy thick shake. Everything about the consistency and texture of this shake is fab - it's really thick (as promised!) yet not too thick, and really smooth. It goes down easily and doesn't leave that cloying carpetty feeling on your tongue or a bad taste in your mouth.

The taste however is a different matter. On first taste I noticed that it didn't especially remind me of a bar of Galaxy, but it was quite chocolaty and tasty. After a few mouthfuls though, it started to seem more and more bland, as though they hadn't quite measured the ingredients out right. The back of the bottle claims that the shake is "more sumptuous than ever" but that's not a word I'd use to describe this (though I would use it to describe Galaxy chocolate). This didn't really affect my enjoyment of it I have to say, because I soon polished off the bottle, but I think they could make the chocolate 'hit' a bit stronger!

The nutritional information on the bottle is contradictory and confusing - on the back there is the main nutrition table which gives values per 100ml, and on the side there is the supposed 'clear-labelling' of nutritional values, where it gives key values per 200ml. Remember, this is a 440ml bottle, so to work out how many calories is in the whole thing you need to take 180 and times it by 2.2! I thought the government were trying to make food labelling clearer for all and I often find that labels give out values for a smaller amount than you've actually consumed so at first glance you might think this shake is only 180 calories, when it's actually 396! No wonder the nation is on the brink of an obesity epidemic! It also contains 61% of your daily sugar and 15% of your daily fat, though it a good source of calcium and does not contain artificial colours or sweeteners. Contains milk, gluten and soya and is suitable for vegetarians.

Overall this is a really tasty and thick chocolate milkshake, but it doesn't taste of Galaxy and it's quite bad for you!

Summary: A nice treat!
