Advantages: Taste, frequently on special offer

Disadvantages: Not as good as other bottled ciders

Gaymers cider has been around since 1770 making it one of the oldest ciders on supermarket shelves. It isn't the cider I drink most often as I tend to prefer the taste of slightly sweeter ciders such as Magners or even Jaques. However, after stumbling across four bottles for just £2 whilst wandering around Asda I decided it would be a crime not to buy some.
Gaymers is 4.5% volume and one 330ml bottle contains 1.5 unit s of alcohol. This is about average for most dry ciders and like all alcohol should be drunk responsibly. Alternatively, it can be purchased in 440ml cans.

~Taste~
Gaymers is definitely a dry cider and has a very crisp and clean taste. In my opinion it is much less sweet than other bottled ciders such as Magners or Bulmers which makes this easy to drink. I'm not a fan of overly sweet drinks so for me this an excellent aspect to the drink. I also find it much smoother drinking and so, unfortunately, can down quite a lot of the stuff. It has a bit of a smoky taste too which is a little unusual but quite pleasant though can become a little sickly. It also seems to lack some of the body of other ciders which is a shame and means Gaymers doesn't really shine.

~Packaging~
The version I purchased comes in plain green bottles (although Gaymers cider can be bought in cans as well) with a red label on the body of the bottle and a gold one around the neck. To me it isn't a design that particularly stands out but it's something familiar that I know I can rely on. The colours and simple yet slightly old-fashioned style of the bottle seems quintessentially English(despite the Gaymer Cider Company being a worldwide brand.)

~Cost~
Usually Gaymers cider costs around the £3.70 mark for four 330ml bottles. However there are usually many offers around. As I have previously mentioned, Asda is currently selling this four pack for just £2, as are Tesco's, which I think is fantastic value. At the original price I think it is a little expensive and would rather spend my money on an alternative such as Strongbow.

~Final Opinion~
I enjoy drinking Gaymers cider occasionally but wouldn't say it is my favourite cider. Though I like the taste of the drink it seems to be missing the extra boost of flavour that make Strongbow and Magners so delicious. Anyone who likes dry cider will probably find this a pleasant drink and it actually seems to be experiencing something of a revival at the moment especially amongst young people. I will probably purchase Gaymers Cider again in the future but I think I'll keep an eye out for the special offers. All in all this is a solid cider that doesn't quite manage to shine.

Summary: Serve over ice

Great review. 'Quintessentially' - I love this word! Especially when applied to one of my favourite tipples.

I have only recently re-discovered cider as a refreshing drink. I haven't tried this one though.
