Advantages: Nice Bottle, Nice colour
Disadvantages: Yucky dry taste that left me feeling Queasy
Ok let's face it. I am a good olde Cider drinker !!
I have tried alot of different Alochol over the years from Lager to Vodka but have never found one I have liked as much as Cider. I am a Strongbow drinker and a nice cold pint on a summers day is just delicious.
Over the past few months my friends have been raving about Gaymers Cider from the Original to the Pear. My one friend in particular is a regular drinker and made me promises to try one. I am up for trying something at least once so I thought I would give it a go.
I had never heard of Gaymers and was so shocked to learn they has been brewing cider since 1770. Do I really walk around the supermarket with my eyes closed? I think I must. It is generally known as Gaymer's Olde English Cyder which has made it different with an alternative spelling. The cider is also brewed in Somerset where as Strongbow and Woodpecker which are britains most popular brands are brewed in Herefordshire. Again as I thought all ciders were made in Somerset this was another shock to me. I always thought I was a mine field of all sorts of information but these simple facts have seemed to pass me by.
Alcohol content is something that has never really bothered me but with a content of 4.5 % it seemed a bit lower than Strongbows 5.4% which I have been used for several years.
As it was my birthday this weekend we decided to have a party, with some party food and yes of course Alcohol!! It was down to me to collect the alcohol for the night and as Gaymers was on offer in Somerfield for £6.99 I thought this was the ideal opportunity to try it out. I wish however, I had stuck with good old Strongbow.
It came in an appealing bottle with a Lager bottle top and when I poured it into the glass was a nice light yellow colour, slightly lighter than Strongbow and woodpecker. I thought I was going to find another drink finally that I would really like, but the bottle and colour seemed the only benefit to the bevarage.
As soon as I took the first sip I was highly unimpressed with the taste. It reminded me of White Lightning which is a cheap white cider that you can pick up for £2.99 a bottle. White Lightning is the sort of drink to me that you buy at the age of 14 when you don't seem to have alot of funds and want to get drunk quickly at your mates party. It seemed to be very dry and bitter. I know that strongbow is a Dry Cider but Gaymer's Pear cider just made me so thirtsy and my mouth so dry that I felt slightly queasy.
Needless to say I quickly transfered back to Strongbow and will be sticking with my preffered drink for now, avoiding Gaymer's Pear Cider completely.
After all the hype of this product I was very disappointed with it and will not be recommending it to any of my fellow drinkers.
Summary: Will be Sticking to what I know (Strongbow) in the future.

- 01/09/09 I find a lot of brands Pear cider's are like slightly tasteless versions of their original cider, though Kopparberg is excellent. :) tom |
