Advantages: Great party drink; keeps you warm; loosk interesting

Disadvantages: sticky; if you don't like cinnamon you will hate this

It was 1996 when I first tried Goldschlager, it was long before it became
widely popular and available in the UK and my American housemates at university had bought a bottle back from the states with them after Christmas. They had told us of this drink "goldschlager" that I had struggled to pronounce and indeed it had many other names before I eventually got my head round the correct pronunciation. The told us of this drink that had little bits of gold floating around in it and we all really liked the sound of it.

Goldschalger is a European liqueur and comes in a bottle which has a very large base and then a thin neck, very similar to a brandy bottle. It is a clear spirit that as I said has little flakes of gold floating around in it. The bottle I can only compare to one of those snow shaker's. I used to love those as a kid, you know all the snow flakes settle on the bottom of a really cheesy snow scene and then you shake it and it looks like it is snowing, well this is obviously the grown up version!

It is a clear spicy cinnamon spirit. If you can assess it on the few seconds in which it passes through your lips I would say that it is very sweet and slightly syrupy with a cinnamon and spicy taste that linger in your mouth for ages afterwards. it is definitely a good drink to warm you up before you attempt to stagger home at night.

So, how do you drink it??? The drink is a fun drink basically and is used as a shooter. Goldschlager was originally created as a sipping liqueur, however, believe me this is not the kind of thing you want to be sipping over ice however much you love cinnamon (as I do). Goldschlager isn't really the kind of liqueur that you can mix with anything, it doesn't go well with lemonade or fruit juice. To get the best results out of it as a shooter they recommend that you chill it or place it in the freezer and then give it a good shake before pouring to make sure everyone gets a few gold pie
ces in their drink (obviously everyone wants a bit of gold in their schlager!). THE ultimate party drink I believe.

The thing that I have found with goldschlager is that one shooter is just never enough and they do have addictive properties! For example, monday night is a big student night out and you can buy shots of it for just £1, now surely thar is asking for trouble. At 43.5% alcohol, having one too many shots of goldschlager can be quite disasterous. It promotes wild behavior and even at it's most extreme sickness. Believe me there are a few things I have got up to that I probably wouldn't have if I wasn't under the influence! The thing is that the first shot of the evening can be a bit of a shock to the system, but from then on every subsequent one gets a little easier!

Goldchlager is also a great breath freshener and so you need not have any worries about dodgy breath on that night out. However, this brings me on to something important. People either love or hate cinnamon and so it may not be the drink for everyone. Although it may only be a shooter the taste and smell will linger for quite a while.

My only real compliant is that it is really sticky and with shooters there is a great tendancy to get it on your hands.

Goldschlager, you really ought to try it at least once!

The bits of gold are basically just bits of gold leaf that they stuck in there, that's all I know, and twenty four carat as well, apparently.

By the way, 'Easy Tiger'. Nicely.

I think (although I'm not sure) this stuff originated in Poland. We have a Polish ex-servicemens club near us that a lot of people used to hire out for birthday parties when we were in 6th form (ah where has my youth gone). I first tried it at one of these parties and it absolutely blew my head off. It was cool.

One thing I could never figure out about it, it had the gold bits in, but when I drank it I couldn't feel them in my mouth. Weird!!

Brillian t op. Brought back some good memories.

I don't know to be honest. I wanted to know that. They are edible whatever. I couldn't even find anywhere on the web that told me. I will keep looking though. If anyone else knows I would really like to know also!
