Advantages: Makes a change
Disadvantages: Not sure if available everywhere
I've always been partial to cherries, in season I think they are absolutely delicious. Out of season I am always drawn to cherry products perhaps due to fond memories of trebor cherry drops when I was a child (never quite as nice once they took all the nasties out). From ice cream to yoghurt I like them all, so when I saw this cherry nectar in Morrisons I had to give it a try.
This drink is a nectar, not a juice, the difference being that it is made from fruit puree, juice and water. This item cost me £1.46 and comes in a 1 litre recyclable bottle. It is made by a German company and I have not been able to find out the exact nutritional information anywhere, the label just tells me it is 40 percent minimum fruit and that there are no added preservatives. When you hold the bottle up to the light the drink is a very dark wine-red and you can see the bits of fruit in it before you shake it.
Drinking this nectar is rather strange but pleasant. At the risk of coming over all pseudo wine expert when you first sip it it doesn't taste of anything much at all. The flavours then kick in, and it tastes - well like fresh cherries exploding in your mouth, as opposed to more bland ones in yoghurts or icecream. It really is a very different and interesting drink, quite adult and not over sweet, not like a squash at all but still with that nice cherry taste.
I find this nectar is best served over crushed ice or diluted a little. It would probably work quite well as a cocktail base too. It is a rather refreshing and tasty little drink.
Granini produce a range of other nectars which are available in most supermarkets. I like the pear and peach drinks but I think that this is my favourite so far and will be a regular if unusual purchase in our household.
Summary: A soft drink with a difference
