... for £2.80. It was this disparity in prices that led me to turn to ale in search of something that didn't hit the wallet so badly. I tried many a different ale: Hobgoblin, Spitfire, London Pride, Black Sheep but out of the many fine ales I've had the pleasure of sampling, Abbot is one of my favourite. Being dark in appearance, one is led to believe that this will be strong and very malty tasting but rather than experiencing the contortion of facial muscles that I endured when drinking Hobgoblin, I actually found my eye...more

Premium Review Greene King abbot ale: A cost-effective alternative to premium lagers. (326 words)

Possibly one of my favourite ales and at 5.0% abv, really packs a punch. Whilst working in a bar during my studies, it really hit home how much alcohol prices have experienced a meteoric rise under the current leadership. Upon joining the pub, the cheapest lager was a reasonably £2.60 and upon leaving, the same lager was now £3.05. Which one you ask? Carling....yes, Carling. Ale on the other hand didn't experience the same rise and when I left, you could still purchase a pint of 'Abbot' for £2.80. Greene King brewery has taken its fair share of criticism for how it has bought out numerous pubs and refused to accept local beers from microbreweries in a variety of areas. Politics aside, this beer is a perfect example of why you should not judge a ciompany solely on their public actions. Abbot Ale is a beautifuly refreshing ale with a premium 5% ABV. Malty and full of flavour, this beer has actually lost a lot of its flavour in comparison to many years ago, but still is a brillant beer to have in the pub. Easily available in most greene king pubs, as well as a myriad of others, Abbot Ale is one of the most reliable beers from Greene King. I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Greene King abbot ale: Good session ale if you can find a pub that knows how to loo ... (229 words)

Abbot ale was responsible for my switch, as a young man, from drinking lager to drinking real ale. I don't drink a great deal of the stuff any more, because unfortunately it can be hard to find a decent pint of it in pubs. The beer is a dark ale, not particularly strongly flavoured or hoppy, but very drinkable when you have a decent pint of it. The big problem is that as it is brewed by a large brewer, a lot of pubs will sell this - this in itself is not a problem, however the majority of pubs that sell this are unable to keep a decent real ale. It takes cellarmanship that your typical sky sports & free pool on thursdays establishment cannot attain. One ...  Read the complete review

Abbot ale is one of the top ales on my list is has a very nice taste that leave a good taste on your pallet. It is served in alot of pubs all over but the most common would be J.D Weatherspoons at a very cheap price. It also appears at alot of beer festivals that i have been to. It has a 5% ABV content so it is a little strong after a fair few you will feel it hit you hard. Abit of history on the beer is that this is greene kings flasgship brand and its brewed in cask barrells. It has a malty taste with a hint of spice to it so it is a drink that can be loved by anyone that loves there ale. It is very smooth and is well matured so it can keep you ...  Read the complete review
