Advantages: World famous, always available, scrummy

Disadvantages: Sometimes quite expensive

Guinness comes in two flavours in your local pub: Guinness Draught and Guinness Extra Cold. The extra cold variety is exactly the same, but a bit cooler. (Big Tip: If you don't like it that cold, then order a pint about ten minutes before you want to drink it.)

I don't know what it is about Guinness that makes it so popular. The americans sitting next to me in the pub the other day looked at it with some amusement (despite Guinness being available just as much over there, by the looks of things). "Isn't it awfully strong?" says one. "It seems very heavy", says another.

Fully flavoured, with a creamy head, the thing you'll notice about Guinness is the time it takes to pour. Much has been made of this in Guinness's advertising campaign - you apparently need to pour two-thirds of the pint at a 60-degree angle, then wait a bit, then top it up. Clever pubs, or bored barstaff, will attempt to use the top-up to draw a lucky clover on the top of your beer. It's not big, not clever, and I'm not quite sure why they do it.

It's a great pint. The cans taste just the same as the pub-pulled pint, too.

Just be careful, though. Guinness, to this drinker at least, seems to have an interesting laxative effect...
