Advantages: Crisp refreshing beer, A little more exclusive, High alcohol content

Disadvantages: More expensive, Bitter if that bothers you

On a recent visit to Amsterdam I consumed enough beer to blunt my opinion-writing abilities. I have now recovered sufficiently to deliver this opinion on Heineken, the source of my initial problem.

Some History
------------

Heineken Beer is a Dutch institution. Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought the Stadhouderskade Brewery in Amsterdam in 1863 when he was only 22 years old. He borrowed the money needed from his mother! With the help of Dr Elion, a student of Louis Pasteur, they isolated a pure strain of yeast for Heineken Beer. This Heineken “A” yeast culture is still today used as the basis for the pure Heineken taste. The original brewery site is today still used as the location for “The Heineken Experience”, an interactive, guided tour through the history and production of this wonderful beer. A trip well worth taking if you happen to be in Amsterdam (I did!). It is also well worth noting that Heineken is responsible for the brewing and production of Amstel, another well known and respected brandname.

The Product
-----------

Heineken Beer is brewed from pure natural ingredients – water, barley malt and hops. An extensive brewing and fermentation process, during which the “A” yeast culture is added, eventually leads to the delivery of a golden coloured, uniquely tasting and full flavoured beer. Heineken claims that this “classic natural process” ensures that the beer stays crisp and fresh. I have to agree.
Alcohol content is quoted as a good 5.4 % per volume. It goes without saying that you cannot consume too many of these puppies if you plan on driving home.

Price
-----

A comparison between Heineken and a local lager reveals the following. I tried to compare prices between Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s as published on their websites.

12 x 440 ml cans of Heineken
Tesco - £9-99 Sainsbury - £8-99

12 x 500
ml cans of Carling
Tesco - £7-47 Sainsbury - £8-49

Heineken’s Global Contribution
------------------------------

Through their constant striving towards the purest water possible for their beer, Heineken has been involved in much research concerning water purification and conservation. This knowledge is passed on as part of their environmental policy.
Heineken and Amstel are also massive sponsors of international sports. US and Australian Open Tennis, Rugby World Cup and UEFA Champions League Football to name a few.

Drinking Heineken
-----------------

The taste is distinctively bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. A pleasant and very drinkable beer, with not too much of an aftertaste (often a problem with beer). It is best enjoyed very cold and always in a clean glass, when it is also at it’s most refreshing. This is not a beer which will convince non-beer drinkers to switch alliance, but if you are a serious beer drinker, I do believe that you will enjoy this product. I do.

All lager does *not* taste the same! Having said that, most of it's pretty similar, apart from Fosters which tastes dire.

Heathen that I am, most lager tastes the same to me. Guess I don't drink enough of it - prefer red wine - Kay
