Hipp Organic First Infant Milk
I had seen this product before I had given birth to Jack and as I was sure that I was certainly not going to breast feed I knew I had to get prepared and have the milk formula ready and waiting for me to go into hospital. I had a scan of all the different milk formulas available and this one really caught my eye.
For pretty much the same price as all the other milk powders this one actually boasts being organic! I paid round about £6 for this 900gram box. Inside there are two silver bags with half the powder in each. Compared to the SMA that has a tin with a plastic lid for easy use and even easier to seal up this Hipp organic formula is much harder to store and to reseal.
Hipp organic uses no GM ingredients and the cows they use graze in fields that are organically maintained without the use of chemical or synthetic sprays. The formula is certified organic by the soil association. All this really sounds brilliant and this is why I was attracted to use this product in the first place.
The front of the box states that the packets are now re-sealable but personally I had real trouble in resealing them when I neared the end of the first packet. I had opened and closed the pack so much that the sticky re-sealable tag had lost all of its re-sealability.
However when I took this milk powder into the maternity unit at the hospital and after my baby was born the midwives at he hospital asked me why I had chosen to use this particular one. They did not seem very keen for me to use it and wondered why I had not stuck to something more common such as SMA or Cow and Gate. They thought there was a special reason why my baby was having organic food. As this formula is also suitable for vegetarians they wondered if I was one. I of course explained that there was no particular reason for me buying it just for the simple fact it was the same price as all the others by had the added fact of being organic! They really did not seem too impressed.
The box of this Hipp organic first infant milk states that Hipp has been the leader in providing organic infant nutrition for over 50 years now and the this particular infant milk meets all the compositional criteria required by law. The fact that the midwives at my local hospital did not even recognise this particular formula is really surprising but also made me quite worried.
After Jack polished off so much milk in the first few days of being in hospital and each time was really rather sick with it, I did start to get concerned that this Hipp organic milk was perhaps not the best choice for him. One midwife said that because both my boyfriend and me have asthma this might mean that jack is allergic to the milk and he probably would need special baby milk! This now was getting me really worried especially when this midwife persisted and went to get some of this special milk powder for me to start using. It was a smaller tub of the formula and cost nearly twice as much at £11! Of course if I really thought Jack needed it then I would of paid the money twice over but personally my Asthma is virtually non-existent and I couldn’t believe that they could say so easily that he was allergic to the milk especially when so many people now a days are diagnosed with having some sort of slight asthma problem. I therefore sought out another midwife and asked her for some advice. This midwife explained to me that most babies are sick with the milk in the first few days because of not having had any sort of milk drink before and its just getting them used to it!
This midwife really did put my mind at rest with the fact the Jack may be allergic to the milk but I still felt uncomfortable with using this Hipp Organic as it did appear to be a far less popular milk formula than many others. As soon as we arrived home I made my boyfriend go out and buy some SMA milk formula. After finishing the first bag in the Hipp organic box we started with the SMA gold. This does seem like such an awful waste of half a box of the Hipp milk powder but if Jack kept the milk down better then that for me was worth the waste.
Using SMA did generally seem better compared to the Hipp Jack kept most of the feed down and continued on to want more and more and now at 7 weeks is having 7oz! He is a bit of a chub!! Not only is SMA easier to open and close but the milk powder does smell slightly nicer than the Hipp did. I know Hipp do sell a lot of baby food products but I think perhaps they are not the best company to buy baby milk from. I am definitely sticking to SMA gold which we use during the day and we have even started using the SMA White that is specially designed for hungrier babies and this I believe makes him sleep better through the night. Hipp organic do not do a hungrier baby milk powder so all in all I am pleased I swapped in the early stages. For the same price I think sticking to the popular brands is always the better idea!
Summary: stick with the popular brands
