Advantages: Very fortified with vitamins and minerals, low calorie
Disadvantages: Tastes very artificial.
As a kid, horlicks was a favourite bedtime drink. It was unlike anything else to me. It was milky and delicious, nothing, except hot chocolate, could beat it.
But then, as I got older, and more health concerned, I wanted to cut back calories, which brought me to hotlicks malt extra light.
Upon opening the container, I was greeted by a nice smell - malty and sweet.
Nutrition wise it is very good, 35 calories per cup, and fortified with loads of vitamins and minerals. It has 400mg of calcium, which is great. It contains 0.3g of salt, which is not so great, but nothing I can't deal with.
I put in the recommended amount into a mug, and made as directed. It was a light colour with a thin layer of froth on top. It smelt a bit fake, but because it containes aspartame, I expected that. After it had cooled, I tasted the eagerly anticipated drink.
Blech.
It tasted revolting. Fake and not like the original at all. I put in some sugar, to try and make it better, but that made it worse. I chucked the drink out.
A couple of months later, I tried it again. This time, it was more palatable. It had a hint of the drink I knew and loved, but this was overtaken by a strong artificial taste.
It also doesn't have the effect of putting me to sleep. I suppose this is because of the lack of milk, which is what induces sleepiness. Perhaps after a few more cups it will be better, but my advice is, stick to the original, it may be higher in calories, but the taste is worth it.
Summary: Stick to the original for a relaxing evening drink.
