Advantages: Wholesome and tastes good

Disadvantages: The best type is not instant so you need to take care to make it well

I think this is the most comforting drink you can get. There's even something special about the ritual of making it, making a paste with a splash or two of milk and two or three heaped teaspoonfuls of Horlicks, and then carefully heating up the milk before slowly mixing it together.

For me, Horlicks has to be the traditional sort. It has to come in that jar with the bobbly edges, and the big blue plastic screwcap lid, sealed in with paper.
However, it is also available as Instant or Light, and there is even a chocolatey version.

It has a lovely flavour - malted milk, just like those biscuits with cows on. One or two of those and you've really got a feast. Or a couple of digestive biscuits.

Once you've made it, it's at the perfect temperature to drink straight away, and you don't need to add sugar, because there's enough sweetness already in it. It satisfies you like food, so it is excellent halfway through a cold morning. It's also great late at night if your evening meal was quite early and you've been busy since. It helps to calm you down if you've been working late, and it's a great drink to have in bed or even in the bath. (On special occasions, a little whisky chaser is fantastic!).

Expect to pay between about £2.50 for a 500g jar of original Horlicks, or £1.60 for 300g, with similar prices for the instant variety. (Prices May 2009)

Summary: Comfort in a mug
