Advantages: Lovely taste
Disadvantages: Very expensive
When I've been working in Sainsbury's, I've had to put these drinks out for ages, and they became very alluring after a while, and I just had to give them a try. I was startled, though, at the cost - £2.99 for a mere litre container is extremely expensive when compared to similar alternatives. Is it worth the extra money? What differentiates it and makes it cost that much more?
Well, whilst I maintain that they aren't worth how much more expensive they are than conventional fruit juices, they are unique and tasty for sure. They are, unexpectedly, rather thick though, and essentially resemble a milkshake that has "bits" of fruit in.
The conceit that bothers me slightly is their claim that this is somehow cheaper than doing it home-made. I'm not particularly convinced by this, considering how cheap fruit is, and how many you could buy (with a litre of milk) for £2.99. Even if these do work out cheaper, I can't imagine it's by a considerable margin at all.
Now, to actually discuss the product itself, it is very delicious indeed, and in observing any of the cartons, you are informed of how many fruits actually go into them, which does seem somewhat more substantial and does help to justify the price slightly.
My advice, if you enjoy these so much, is to hunt around for a special offer. I've only occasionally seen them on offer in the likes of Tesco, but it does happen, and then simply bulk buy them, because £2.99 for 1 litre is incredibly expensive any way you put it. In short, these are great tasting, very healthy drinks with a wide range of flavours, but for those on a budget (myself notably), they're simply too pricey.
Summary: Great if you've got a bit of spare cash

- 29/06/09 I think it's cheaper because you couldn't just buy the fruit needed for one litre of smoothie, you'd have to buy a lot more, like a whole bunch of grapes instead of just five or a whole bunch of bananas instead of two or whatever. So you'd end up paying more that way... |
