Advantages: Its reputation preceeds it.
Disadvantages: Its whiskey and its 40%- dont forget that bit
I avoided drinking Jack Daniels ("JD") for many years as I thought (without trying any of it) that I didn't like whiskey as it has a reputation- only people who are/ look like or live like Jack Nicholson or American Rock Bands drink JD and they drink it neat by the wagon load.
After going off Vodka and coke, then vodka and lemonade then getting bored of vodka and soda and being in a bar where they only had the most limited of drinks choices (vodka. JD or beer) I had to take the plunge.
It tasted better than I expected. I expected something like sherry. It tastes like dandelion and burdock for adults. With this in mind, I have enjoyed the odd JD over the years but find it makes me feel a little sick after three JD and cokes as it is so sweet, but if you are already the worse for wear it is your friend.
Remembering that it is the drink of choice of hardcore rock bands and you drink whiskey when you have had a trauma to settle your nerves (reputedly), I will now normally have a JD and coke either if I feel as if I am actually going to die after too much partying (last drink of the night or first drink of the morning?) believing it will settle my shattered nerves in the process and not make me hideously ill (it works, it goes down well ) and take me closer towards the prospect of sleeping...
A bottle of Jack Daniels will cost you between £17-19 for a 70cl bottle (it is more expensive than Vodka and somewhere closer to the Absinthe (la fee) price bracket: La Fee Absinthe is 45-68% volume and sells for £17-23). You can buy JD it in miniature one shot bottles or a 35cl bottle for around £10. It is 40% abv and still produced by the Jack Daniels Distillery in Tennessee USA. The company has values and a rich history and I applaud them for sticking to their guns and still producing it in the way they always have.
Jack Daniels as a company is fantastic. I have somehow managed to get onto their mailing list and three or four times a year they send me a surprise gift. I have received a leather luggage tag, a metal branded marinading brush, a JD Poker chip... and every year without fail they send me a desk calendar for free. More drinks companies should follow suit. ! Way to keep your customers!
Overall, I would not recommend Jack Daniels as the first drink of the night,. It is more the thing you reach for when you abandon all hope (in a good way). You and JD will get on far better if there is some respect involved and you arent just knocking it back trying to get hammered- it is more like a nice drinking companion that will sit down with you for a few drinks, sort your head out or give your brain a bit of a hug then go on its way.
Summary: Jack knows
