 ... whisky. Jameson and other Irish whiskey use anthracite (a form of coal which is virtually pure carbon) which is virtually smokeless. (the use of the two spellings is of course deliberate. For the few who may not know in Ireland it is spelt with the 'e' in Scotland it's spelt without.) I personally prefer the Irish whiskey as I don't like the smokey taste of Scotch. Jameson 12 Year Old Special Reserve (formaly known as Jameson 1780) is a pot still whiskey made with a blend of malted and unmalted barley. It has a smooth yet full-bodied flavour. (the 1780 comes from the year Jameson was established) Like all Irish Whiskeys it is triple distilled unlike Scotch which is only distilled twice and bourbon which is distilled once. This third distillation adds the smoothness to the finished whiskey. The other main difference is how the grain is dried. For Scotch the main fuel used for the fire to dry the grain is peat which is a smokey fuel hence the smokey taste in the finished whisky.
