J&B Rare was the whiskey that made me appreciate whiskeys in general. Before then, I'd only really tried Bells and the like, and not really rated whiskey as a drink. It just seemed too harsh and bitter for my tastes. I much prefered bourbons like Jack Daniels, for their sweetness and smoothness.

However, this all changed when I went to a cousins wedding and had a glass of J&B forced upon me by extremely "merry" uncles. Expecting a not too pleasant experience, I intended to down it swiftly but had a sip first, just to test the water, as it were.

The flavour is quite mellow, it's smooth enough to sip away the hours and certainly warms the back of your throat as it goes down. There's a slight sweetness to it too, with a kind of ginger type taste initially, followed by a delicious rush of other, almost fruit like, flavour. It all ends with the alcoholic warmth on the tongue, with a nice level of bitterness.

This scotch whiskey is made from a blend of six special grain whiskies and 36 single malts, which is matured in oak casks for a year after the blending process. This method gives the whiskey it's smooth balanced flavour.

Currently, J&B are aiming to make their Rare whiskey more popular with the 20-35 demographic, via increased publicity using product placement in movies, as well as snazzy website design (www.jbscotch.com).

Unsurprisingly, I like J&B. It's a nice smooth drink, working best on its' own or with ice. It's too rich to drink copious amounts of it in one sitting, so encourages savouring of its flavour. I'd definatley recommend trying it out if you're not a big whiskey fan, it may convert you.

As far as bad points go, it can be a little pricey, either at the off-licence or down the pub. The taste however justifies the extra spending.

As for its' name.... Well, it does get pretty rare when my friends come over.
