Advantages: SMOOTH TASTE, NOT BITTER, NICE AND STRONG!
Disadvantages: NOT FAIR TRADE OR AS NICE AS FRESH!
Kenco Really Smooth
My local corner shop doesn’t stock fair trade coffee, which I have to say I always prefer to buy. It does, however, stock Kenco Really Smooth, and I have to say, ethics aside, it is a coffee which I really enjoy.
With its distinctive scarlet label and lid, a 100g glass jar of this taste sensation will cost you in the region of £2.40 – Tesco price is currently £2.38 for a 100g jar, £4.68 for a 200g jar, and £5.78 for a 300g jar. If you drink your coffee as strong as I do, then you’re probably looking at a 100g jar lasting you a week, so buy in bulk or go for a bigger jar, as it works out cheaper per 100g!
When I make my coffee, I use 2 heaped teaspoons, 1 teaspoon sugar and then add the hot water – close to boiling but not actually at boiling point. Then I add milk.
You might think that 2 heaped teaspoons is quite a lot of coffee, and you’d probably be right, but I like my coffee strong, and find that any less than this amount makes for a much weaker, much less coffee flavoured brew, which I’m afraid just doesn’t cut the mustard with me!
However, hot, strong, sweet and milky, it makes a fabulously rich coffee that will satisfy the coffee requirements of anyone except perhaps the most hard-core of Italian coffee admirers!
For taste, it’s the closest instant coffee that I’ve found to compare with the thrill of freshly ground coffee, but to be fair, it’s still not really in the same ballpark. Fine for a quick fix, or when you can’t be bothered to grind your own and deal with the damp, gritty aftermath, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s any way close to the real deal!
I have to admit that the best coffee I ever tasted in my life was supped standing up at a bar in a tiny street café on Via Sistina in Rome on a warm Thursday afternoon in December. Nothing I’ve tasted since has ever quite compared!
I think for taste, price and availability, Kenco Really Smooth gets a 4/5 from me. For price, it’s certainly more expensive than a supermarket’s own brand, but compared with a real live fair-trade product (and don’t be duped into thinking this coffee is fair-trade just because it says “sustainable” on the packaging – it is not fair-trade – for details go to the website below!) – it comes out relatively on parr.
Kenco Really Smooth can be found at all leading supermarkets and lots of corner shops all over the country. If you can get it at your local shops, please do so, and help support the small traders, instead of putting pennies into the pockets of the fat-cat-supermarket men!

Thank you very much for reading! Happy coffee making! Kate x
Summary: A GOOD COFFEE, NOT EXPENSIVE BUT NO COMPARISON TO THE REAL FRESH STUFF!

- 09/10/06 Milk and two sugars please, Katie!!! Though why I have two sugars is quite beyond me as I'm already sweet enough as is (of course!)...

- 09/10/06 Not convinced on the fair trade thing.
REAL fair trade would mean they compete on price. The most expensive coffee per 100g that I have ever seen was actually fair trade. As with everything, a social conscience is a luxury of them as can afford it. |
