Kvas - Bread Drink ... black or rye bread. It is popular in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland and other Eastern and Central European countries as well as in all ex-Soviet states, like Uzbekistan.

Kvas is a favourite drink of mine, first introduced to me about 5 years ago in Lithuania where it is known as Gira. I'm not the only one who likes it - it is generally the no.1 selling non-alcoholic drink in former Soviet countries and has some fans in other Central and Eastern European countries too. The ubiqutious yellow tanks with an old lady or man pouring plastic glasses of the stuff for pedestrians mark many a street corner in Russia or Ukraine. In the Baltic countries, it tends to be sold in bottles by large companies - sales outsell Coca-Cola.
