Advantages: My husband can drink it to his heart's content
Disadvantages: a little pricey, but it's worth it!!
My poor husband has suffered for years with a lactose intolerance. He was never "officially" diagnosed, but had the common symptoms of it - stomach ache (and gurgling!), diarrhoea, and genereal bloating and uncomfortable-ness after having milk. To combat it he just adjusted his diet to help - rarely ate cheese, and did not have cereal in the mornings. We were not aware that there was such a thing as lactose free milk.
We stumbled across Lactofree in Tesco's while shopping one day - and thought we would give it a go.
Lactofree is made by Arla and comes in a 1 litre carton with a pour spout on top - not like a normal milk carton but more like a juice carton. The packaging is in their trademark colours of white, black and green with a picture of a cow on it.
At £1.37 a litre this is more expensive than "regular" milk, but we are willing to pay for this as it is worth every penny.
Lactose is the sugars which is naturally found in cow's milk. People who are lactose intolerant do not have the ability to digest this sugar.
Lactofree is made with cow's milk, but the milk is filtered to remove most of the lactose. They then add Lactase enzyme which breaks down the remaining sugars into simpler forms which the body can more easily digest, without having all the stomach cramps!!
We have regular semi-skimmed milk as well as Lactofree Semi-Skimmed in our house, and I have to say that the two are very similar. Lactofree looks and smells exactly like regular milk, if anything i would say that it has a more creamy taste. Sometimes I even sneak some of this into my tea and porridge as its so tasty!! You can use it in cooking where you would use regular milk - my husband can now enjoy yorkshire puddings with his roast dinner again thanks to Lactofree.
Compared to regular semi skimmed milk, Lactofree has less calories per 100ml - Lactofree has just 39 calories whereas regular milk has 50 calories. Each 200ml serving gives 30% of your recommended allowance of calcium, 30% of your allowance of vitamin B2 and a whopping 100% of vitamin B12 allowance.
Once you have opened the carton they recommend you use within three days. We have left it open for up to five days without any adverse effects. You usually get quite a good date on the packet - when we buy ours it normally has about four weeks until the Use By date, so you can store it for longer than regular milk.
Lactofree is suitable for vegetarians and you can also freeze it for up to one month.
Overall I think this is a wonderful product - my husband's digestive system will agree too!!
Summary: A great product.
