Advantages: Free of lactose, it's cows milk I can drink! Perfect for cooking.
Disadvantages: None?
Being lactose intolerant means cows milk is a no no... Well, that was until Lactofree came along with their Lactofree milk!
Unlike other lactose free milks (rice milk, oat milk etc), Lactofree is actually cows milk, but it has been filtered to remove half of the lactose and then lactase enzyme is added to break down the remaining lactose so lactose intolerant bodies can absorb it. Nothing else is added or removed. This milk also contains the same calcium levels as normal cows milk, so it great for growing lactose intolerant kids.
As this is essentially normal cows milk with the lactose taken out & broken down, Lactofree milk can be used exactly the same as you would use normal cows milk. In the past I've always gone for rice milk as I quite like it's taste, but I've found that this Lactofree milk actually works better in cooking. For example, parsley sauce made with rice milk tends to be of a thin consistency, where as parsley sauce made with Lactofree milk has a nice thick-ish consistence.
Taste-wise, you would never know the difference. I've poured myself a glass of Lactofree Chilled Whole Milk and it tastes exactly the same as any other whole milk. (Yes, despite being an adult, I still prefer the taste of full fat whole milk to watery semi skimmed!).
Lactofree milk is available in 1 litre cartons of Chilled Whole Milk, Long Life Whole Milk, Chilled Semi Skimmed Milk and Long Life Semi Skimmed Milk. Each carton has a RRP (recommended retail price) of £1.37, but my last carton of Lactofree Chilled Whole Milk cost me £1.30 from Tesco.
So, if you want to drink cows milk (or use it in recipes) without getting the reactions & side effects then this is the milk for you! It tastes like cows milk and actually is cows milk, just without the lactose!
Lactofree also do lactose-free yogurt and cheese, which are well worth checking out. Now, if only they'd make some Lactofree Milk Chocolate!
Summary: Lactose free cows milk!

- 24/10/09 I agree with davidbuttery's comment regarding the trouble taken by the company to make the drink, not only safe, but tasty for lactose intolerant sufferers.
Lovely review. |

- 24/10/09 Sounds like a very good product indeed! I'm lucky enough not to have to worry about this, but it's always good when a company takes the trouble to make their alternative taste as it should. =:) |
