So, you're sitting with an old man, preferably with a big white beard in a library of sorts. The walls are caved with books, mementos and photographs of a bygone era. There are two large oxblood red leather chairs in the room, and the roaring open fire is encased with mahogany structure. The room is dark, but each flicker of each flame highlights a different character on his face.

He recounts a story that leaves you bewildered. A tale of treachery, adventure and dashing bravado in a bygone era, it may about some treasure, a dalliance with a lost pacific cannibal tribe or even a First World War hero valiantly conquering the enemy single handily. (It's up to you; it's your own story). He asks you if you want a drink, he reaches for the decanter.

Enthralled as you are, you take it with a pinch of salt. Society has taught you not to take things at face value, he could be senile or worse still trying gain your confidence in order to con you. How do you know?

It's easy to tell; Rum.

If he pours Whiskey for himself, he was probably a member of the upper echelons, Brandy and he more than likely came across the fable at an after party dinner, and if it was Vodka, then he may very well be a spy.

You see, Rum is what the heroes drink, it's not a sophisticated drink, and it's a way of life for them; a calming substance for the down trodden hero. Sailors, pirates and detectives that are on the edge all drink Rum. It's essentially Lucozade for the anti hero.

The most commonly drunk dark rum is Lambs (with the exception of Barcadi, but that is a little more pure and warrants a different review entirely.) Established in the 1840's by Alfred Lamb, whose distillery was ultimately bombed out of London during World War Two.

The uniquely sweet and spicy flavour produced from sugar canes gathered from the West Indies, and throughout the Caribbean before its distilling process of being aged for a year before being held in a bourbon flask, ready for consumption.

Colouring

Lambs has a consistency darker than whiskey, it should look red, warm and ultimately lethal. It is.


Taste.

Lambs is a very distinctive taste, the first nose full can be deceptively mistaken for Brandy or a strong cherry, the main give away is the strong woody spices that venture up your nasal passages and give your brain a good old welcome home hug.

When tasting, I would suggest just a sip, because the immediate reaction from your palate is alcohol, alcohol, alcohol. Only after a few moments will you be able to taste those specific rich spices that makes you feel like you are eating an antique Chippendale sideboard.

Gulp at your peril and it will make your eyes water, struggle to resurface, before accepting defeat and going to work on your chest cavity warming you up and putting you at ease. You should feel considerably calmer and ready to face any challenge head on, i.e. a swashbuckling duel with an evil count.

Mixing.

As with all spirits it can be diluted with a mixer. May I suggest Coke? For two reasons; the first being that I know of no finer drink, the two dark syrups bode so well, and the second being that I can think of no other.

Brand and Bottling

Lambs are still pioneers for all things British. The bottle itself is adorned in the Union Jack and represents itself as one of the last bastions of the empire. It's message is clear: I am traditional, but non confirmative. I am a loose cannon!
