Advantages: Unique toffee taste, Rich & Dark, U.K. Brand

Disadvantages: Addictive, As with all alcohol it must be drunk in moderation

Alfred Lamb established his business in London in 1849 and created one of the world’s most exciting rums with an irresistable and unique flavour.

Mr Lamb had the sugar cane shipped from the Caribbean to the U.K. and distilled and aged the rum in the United Kingdom.

The rum he created was a fascinating and exciting one with hints of fruit, oak and burnt toffee. This was linked to the fact that the rum was being aged in the English climate rather than that of the tropical climate of the Caribbean. This produced a rum unlike any from the Caribbean and is what characterises Lamb’s till this day.

Until today every bottle of Lamb’s Navy Rum proudly displays the Union Jack since it is indeed distilled in the U.K. However the main ingredient, the sugar cane is till today imported from the West Indies in the Caribbean.

If you have read some of my previous opinions you make be aware that Rum is my drink of choice, with Captain Morgan Dark Rum (Black Label) being my favourite and Bacardi White Rum being my current choice.

I personally do not have anything against other brands of rum, especially the Dark rums and therefore it was without hesitation that I decided to have this at a friends house over the last weekend.

The complexion and colour is dark brown but slightly lighter than the Captain Morgan Black Label. One thing that I noticed about this rum was when I poured in into the glass and before I mixed it with Coke, the aroma was very strong. I could get the smell even though I was holding the glass at least 18” away from my face. The smell is a nice one and is different to other rums. Certainly you get the usual rum smell but this is also combined with something different almost sweetish. This is probably the toffee element in the rum, which is difficult to pin point unless you are aware of what it is.

Lambs Navy Rum contains the standard 40% Alcoholic content associated with good
quality rums but personally speaking I felt it to be much stronger. One of the reasons for this is certainly because it was the first time that I was drinking it and the other reason would be that generally speaking the darker rums are generally heavier than the white rums. Also these dark rums like Lambs Navy and Captain Morgan, that seem to be associated with sailors, pirates and the likes, always seem to have that additional strength that sends your body tingling with warmth.

The unique taste of Lambs Navy Rum has become so popular that a company in the States makes coffee beans laced with Lambs Navy Rum.

On the same note Lambs Navy Rum is very popular as a mix with coffees and other warm drinks, which is helped in a major part by it’s toffee tasting similarities.

Lambs Navy Rum is widely available throughout the U.K. and a comes in a standard 70cl bottle. This is available for between £14.00 to £15.00.

Overall Lamb’s Navy Rum is a rum that has created it’s own characteristics thanks in part to the aging process being done here in the U.K. It is a very popular rum and one that once you get used to, would be very hard to leave.
