Advantages: Flavour rich
Disadvantages: none
Yes, it's a grand drop of scotch indeed. I do like a good single malt and I have tasted a few I must admit. I have a distinct preference for the classic malts but sometines divert to savour others. Over the years I have aquired a taste for the rather stronger flavour of Islay malts and one week while shopping in Tesco, just before Christmas, I saw they were selling single malts vat free. I bought a 10 year old Laphroaig and over the next two weeks enjoyed every drop. I like my scotch poured over ice and love to watch the tiny drops of moisture form on the outside of the cut glass and run down the side highlighted against the pure amber liquid inside. Then, to raise the glass and smell the peat of the scotish glens and imagine the crystal clear streams and rivers that supply the distillary. This I do, and slowly raise the glass to savour the best scotch of the night. Well, the bottle of Laphroaig was so enjoyable I went post haste to the same Tesco branch to get yet another. Wow! This time they were selling Laphroaig cask strength 56% for only £22, vat free! I bought a bottle without delay. I haven't savoured this one yet, need to be in the mood, but I can bet it will be superb. I will report back when I have an empty bottle. Laphroaig is definitely one of the nicest malts from Scotland with a beautiful peaty flavour and a delicate amber colour. Its flavour lingers in the mouth and I think it is rather unique. You must do yourself a favour and try this made in heaven product.

- 10/01/02 I'm not a huge fan of Islay malts - too iodiney for me! |

- 10/01/02 I love the medicinal taste of Laphroaig. I would suggest that you shouldn't be adding ice to it although it is possible that the cask strength will require a drop or two of Scottish mineral water to bring out all the flavour. However - the important thing is to drink it however you find that it tastes best!
If you want a good guide on the best Whiskies and how to enjoy them I would recommend the latest Michael Jackson - he is the most respected writer on Whisky around.
Laphroai g run a cute offer (which I think is still going) whereby if you fill out a form and send it with the foil cover they grant you the lease of a square foot of Islay, the ground rent for which is a tot of Laphroaig every year - it is all quite humorous and cute. |
