Lucozade Energy Cherry
I'm not a big drinker of 'energy' drinks - most of the time, my day starts with enough time for me to have a good breakfast, a cup of tea, and a bit of a relax. However, on occasions, I do oversleep and feel groggy and awful, and don't have the time .
This was the case on tuesday - I woke up at half eight, and had just 20 minutes to get my daughter dressed, fed, teeth brushed, and on her way to school. After that I needed to do a food shop, and then dash home in order to be there to open the door to the gas service fellow .
So, after dropping my daughter off at school, I dashed to the corner shop to get some change for the bus . I don't like to just ask for change, so decided that since I was feeling decidedly groggy, I'd get myself a dose of sugar and caffeine to perk me up. Perusing all the various energy drinks available, I spotted a bottle I hadn't seen before - a drk black label with vibrant red colours splashing all over it, and a picture of some juicy looking cherries . Closer inspection informed me it was 'Lucozade Energy - Giving you a physical edge' .
I like most cherry flavoured items, so decided to give this a bash, taking my 90p to the counter, and opening the bottle as soon as I left the shop, drinking it down on the way to the bus stop .
Having come right out of the fridge in the shop, this was ice cold - just the way it's meant to be enjoyed. Opening the lid and taking a sniff, it's definitely strongly cherry scented, and I can see it'sa lovely rich dark pink /red colour .
Taking a sip, it's very sweet, and pleasantly fizzy . Not a nose stinging over fizziness, but enough to make it very lively . The cherry flavour is strong and very juicy, and the drink itself felt rich and perhaps a little syrupy. I found it instantly refeshing, and it really felt like I'd had a good drink .
Energy wise - well, it wasn't an immediate effect, more of a gentle waking up. I noticed that my groggy headache started to fade away , then I noticed I felt less flat . About an hour after drinking this and I was back to the same level of energy I would normally be at at that time of day . I think they got the balance just right here - it balanced me out on a tired day, but didn't make me hyper or overexcited .
A look at the ingredients tells me this contains 2% cherry juice, which is surprisingly low considering the amount of flavour when drinking it is very strong . It also contains black currant and black carrot juice . I've never seen a black carrot! It also contains glucose fructose syrup (24 %) and caffeine (0.012%)
Clearly, with that amount of glucose and fructose in it, the sugar content is going to be through the roof, and a glance at the nutritional panel tells me that a 380ml bottle of this contains 262 calories and 51.7g of sugar. That is horrendously bad for you - thats 57% of an adults recommended daily amount of sugar . The calorie count is pretty big too for a drink , considering that a black coffee is 0 calories . This isn't going to kill you as an occasional drink when you really do need that boost, but it's not something you should be chugging back on a regular basis .
There is a warning on the pack that this should not be served to children under 3 years. Personally, I think with the high sugar content I would avoid giving this to children completely , at least while their teeth are still forming, unless it's recommended to give them this by a doctor .
The pack also mentions that this is not appropriate for replacing fluids lost by vomiting and diarrhoea.
There is no mention on the pack of this being a danger to a woman who is pregnant, but on this I would consult your doctor . I know I had a lucozade craving when I was pregnant, and it sent my glucose levels so sky high when I had blood tests and urine tests that doctors thought I might be developing diabetes!
Would I recommend this ? Used only very rarely, on a really rough day where you need the pick me up, then certainly - it tastes lovely and it does work, although if you have time a coffee would be a healthier option . This is far too unhealthy to enjoy as a regular drink due to the immense sugar content - which really is a shame as I like the taste .
3 stars - absolutely lovely, works brilliantly, but that sugar content is a horror!
