Advantages: Tried and tested for many years
Disadvantages: Very sweet
When I was a child Lucozade was what people drank only when they were poorly. It was like some kind of mysterious potion that came in a tall orange bottle, wrapped in orange cellophane, a lot posher than any other bottled drink I knew. And of course the drink itself was (still is) orange.
But miraculously when Gran or mum were ill, they would swear a bottle of lucozade would make them better and usually it did. And during my own childhood ailments it was good old Lucozade that came to the rescue, providing those essential fluids I needed to make me well.
No wonder then that when I was ill recently and could not even drink water (it tasted horrid!) I suddenly found myself craving Lucozade.
TASTE
The taste is the same as I remember, even though everything else tasted horrible I was able to manage sips of Lucozade. I longed to take a long drink, but resorted to sipping through a straw as this was the only way my poorly tum could cope. (good tip for anyone who needs fluid).
The taste is very hard to describe, it is tangy without being tart and I am not sure you could say it has a fruity taste, maybe you had better try some for yourself!!! It is very sweet and I am not sure I would be able to drink it at other times.
ENERGY DRINK
Nowadays Lucozade is promoted as an energy drink and the label proudly boasts Brain and Body Energy. So what are the ingredients that make it so good?
On the label it is described as a sparkling glucose drink and is made up of carbonated water, glucose syrup, citric acid, lactic acid, flavourings indlucing caffeine, preservatives (sodium benzoate, sodium bisulphite), Ascorbin acid and sunset yellow colour.
Mmm having just read the list of what it contains I think glucose and water may have been better! I did not realise just what was in there.
NEW IMAGE
But Lucozade has changed its image, as I said it used to be something people drank when they were ill. Obviously now they are trying to market it to appeal as a health and energy drink.
The bottles come in various sizes and are made of lightweight plastic and are shaped so they can be held in the hard easily.
I suppose with its list of ingredients, including caffeine, it may have energy boosting qualities, but you have to weigh up the pros and cons as to whether it is actually good for you or whether drinking water would be better.
COST
A one litre bottle cost about 1.30 from our local supermarket.
Lucozade is also available in cans and smaller bottles, and also in different varieties now, but I am not sure how much these cost.
STOCKISTS
All supermarkets stock Lucozade and it is also available from smaller shops and is often in vending machines too.
RECOMMENDATION
Although I really needed to drink something when I was poorly recently and Lucozade was what I felt I wanted, I am not sure I would buy it at any other time. The taste is too sweet for my normal palate and I wouldn't say it is a particularly refreshing drink either.
But I can be sure that if I am ill again I will turn to my old fashioned remedy - no doubt about it, Lucozade makes me better!!!
Maybe it is pyschological or maybe there is some magic ingredient in there!!!!
Summary: Lucozade always makes me better!
