Advantages: Everything

Disadvantages: Full of sugar so not the most the most healthy of drinks if your watching your weight

When I was in hospital few years back I remember that they had a ban on Lucozade. Gutted, was I because even though I know full well it's not medicinal but I'd put in a huge order of the stuff with my mum and she fell for my puppy dog eyes and then the nurses wouldn't let her in with the stuff!

Me, I'm addicted. It's the best 'soft drink' in the world to me!

Now over the years it's been marketed in so many different ways. It has been pushed as a drink to have during ill health as it contains glucose for a burst of energy and Lucozade got into trouble over this as there is no proof of this really making any one feel well and also it isn't a low calorie drink and is laced with sugar. Now a days it's pushed as a drink to 'give you a physical edge' and is more pushed as a kind of sports drink.

What the company say about Lucozade 'Energy' original flavour....

Designed to provide an energy boost.
Provides glucose fuel for physically active people.

First invented in 1927 by a chemist in Newcastle as a remedy against fatigue.

The Packaging...

Well firstly I must point out that this drink comes in bottles of 380ml, 500ml, and 1 litre bottles and a 330ml can. Now the bottles are all similar regardless of size and the one I'm sat here looking at for the purpose of this review is the 380ml bottle.

The bottle is clear plastic and recyclable with an orange twist on/off cap. Over the bottle is a plastic wrap which if you try hard enough you can pull off the bottle when bored! lol The plastic wrap of the original flavour is orange to match the cap (which has best before date written on it) and clearly tells me in bold yellow writing that it is indeed Lucozade and down the side I'm told 'energy'. On the bottom in black writing I'm told it is Original, referring to the flavour and tells me it's to give me physical edge. On the back of the bottle I'm asked...

Tired of battling through your day?
Get your edge back with lucozade energy.
Provides gluscose which acts fast to refuel your body for physical activity.

Then I'm told, ingredients, a nutritional value chart, an at a glance nutritional chart of the main things I would want to know about, and told Lucozade is not appropriate for replacing the fluid lost duing diarrhoea. warned that if the product is spilt it may stain and that this is healthy if enjoyed as a part of a blanaced diet and it is not suitable for children under 3 years old. I'm then given contact details for Glaxosmithkline (the manufacturers of Lucozade). All in all funky but practical packaging.

Verdict....

For me, this is my favourite flavour of lucozade (original). I love it from the bright orange colour to the soft carbonated bubbles you get. Now this isn't the fizziest of drinks, but I do find it to be one of the most honest. I get sick to death of sugar free and diet soft drinks that taste too sickly sweet and leave a nasty taste in the mouth for ages afterwards. This, ok, contains a lot of sugar but you know that, its expected. You know sugar is meant to create energy and that drinking too much will make your teeth rot and your gut hang over your jeans but this taste real and leaves no nasty aftertaste.

Taste wise it tastes a little thicker with more body in it than what I have just mentioned, and the bubbles are subtle but pleasant. It has a unique taste that is far too hard to describe! It's not too sweet but after discussing this drink with people one of the main things people say about it is it tastes a little salty. Personally I love that teamed with the sugar and I find this drink very morish! Its not fruity as I said hard to describe!

It's a nice drink and I can't be trusted with the huge bottles cos I just swig the lot back. Does it make me feel better? Well thats highly debateable. I haven't gone from feeling like crap on a stick to more human in 0-60 seconds but I think its phycological and so when I'm ill or hungover I do drink this by the bucketload. I just think I'm putting some energy back in and after I've drank some yes I do feel a bit more 'up' than I did!

Drink it in moderation but don't expect to be flying high after drinking it as it contains not alot of caffeine but mainly glucose! Highly addictive and other flavours are available, such as orange, forrest fruits, a lemon (may be more I just havent tripped across them yet!)

Not suitable for diabetics or children under 3 so be aware of that and does contain colouring (sunset yellow)....

Ingredients....

Carbonated Water, Glucose Syrup (25%), Citric Acid, Lactric Acid, Flavouring, Preservatives,(Sodium Benozate, Sodium Bisulphite), Caffeine (0.012%), Antioxidant (Asorbic Acid), Colour (Sunset Yellow).
