Advantages: Tastes nice, can give you a boost
Disadvantages: Check those calories, makes you go fizzy whilst working out, is it as good as h20?
Oh what a hot Summer's day. You should be reclining in a recumbent sweaty slumber soaking up some rays and enjoying life. Belive me I was until about 6.30pm and then I had to go to the dojo. No Aircon, plenty of action and sweat and a lucozade bottle filled up to the brim with water.
'You what!' I hear you scream. You're probably thinking this barmy raconteur has finally taken one to many blows to the head by performing such an act of sacrilege.
Before you judge me and toss me into a vat of glucose allow me to explain. You see, on Saturday I was quaffing said energy drink during a two hour marathon training session and my nephew was also partaking in said beverage. My sensei's eyes knotted in consternation and he elucidated that to drink such fizzy drinks whilst training is not to be advised.
Such a revelation was a surprise to say the least. After all are we not to believe that Lucozade is the stuff of athletical greatness. Won't it lead me to achieve gold...(ok, more likely a lump of lead)? Doesn't it replace all that energy you've just lost?
Well, yes it does. It certainly does give you a kick whilst sweating profusely and I'll not deny that it tastes rather nice. However, there is a pay off. Each one of these little beauties contains 51g of sugar and 260 calories! Now forgive me for being just a bit obtuse but what is the point of working damn hard to burn a few calories away only for you to undo all your hard work with one of these.
I wonder just how many of us are really just very thirsty rather than in dire need of energy. If you're desperate for more energy then the chances are you've simply overdone it.
I'm sure Lucozade does have its place but not to me. Call me a heretic but I question whether this is really a health drink. I believe a can of coke has around 125 calories and this is more than double that! I have to admit to being rather astonished.
So, I have a little wonder drink of my own. It's dirt cheap, rehydrates you and hits the spot at the right time. All you need is an empty container and some manual dexterity to...(drum roll please) use a tap. Yes, that clear stuff coming out of your local pipes will fit the bill for pretty much most of us and has been called Adam's Ale and the stuff of life.
Pure and simply you can't be a good old fashioned bottle of water. That's my way from now on :D
Summary: Is this a health drink? You decide.

- 17/07/09 I have never drank this in my life.
I dislike most fizzy drinks as it is, and the garish colours on the bottle give me the impression that it tastes particularly bad. |
