Advantages: High energy
Disadvantages: Low Taste, high sugars
Lucozade is regarded as the oldest of the common energy drinks, though life didn't start that way, as it was originally created as a medical drink to help against common illnesses such as the Flu, it wasn't until a rebranding campaign in the 1980's that it changed to being an energy drink.
Originally called Glucozade (due to the main ingredient of Glucose syrup, which makes up 25% of the drink) it dropped the G early in it's life and became the drink we all know an love when it was called "Lucozade Energy". The "Lucozade" brand has extended in recent times to include a more scientific approach to sports drinks such as "Lucozade" sport (an isotonic), Lucozade Alert (a caffeine drink) and Lucozade Hydro Active (a Hypotonic). Though to many it's just the original "Lucozade Energy" that counts, and this brand has also been extended to include a variation of flavours including blackcurrant, orange, lemon and apple as wel as the original flavour.
The original comes in a bottle with a red wrapper (the other flavours are coloured accordingly) and is a rather fake looking orange colour (the ingredients describe is as "Sunset Yellow") and the drink contains 2 preservatives (Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Bisulphite) which are both seen as very safe.
So onto the drink it's self, when open it releases a fizzy sound but yet it looks smooth when looked at, it doesn't seem to fizz up (though does if shaken up vigarously). It seems more like a dog with a bark worse than it's bite to be honest. When drank it feels thick and quite gloopy, though I don't think you can "feel" the syrup it is noticably thicker than normal soft drinks but it does seem fairly tasteless. Though it's an energy drink, the key is whether or not their is energy from drinking it, not whether or not i t tastes nice (that comes secondary).
However the energy that the drink sells it's self on is of course the key,and is it there? Yes it it's awakening to say the least though it can take a little while to kick in which isn't always great. The drink is a more immediate release than isotonic drinks that I've tried that seem to take quite a long while to totally work. The idea of the drink is to release the energy in the syrup into the body (which is rather vast acting, though personally I feel caffeine acts slightly quicker).
Nutritional Information (380ml bottle)
266 Calories (13%)
33.1g Sugar (37%)
Nil Fat and Saturates (0%)
0.3g Salt (4%)
Overall a rather tasteless energy drink that is drinkable but has much nicer sister products that I'd rather have including the orange and black currant flavours. If you just want energy this is fine, though personally I'd rather have some flavour with it so for me the Orange one or the Lemon one is great.
Trivia:
The drink contains a very tiny amount of ethanol, which originally kept muslims from drinking it, though it has since been "allowed" by the Muslim council.
Summary: Gimme a flavoured one
