Why Lucozade
****************
As I am sat here at my computer today off sick with probable swine flu I thought I would write about what I am drinking. Lucozade to me since being a child has always been what you drink when you are not well; to give you a lift and some much needed energy.
What is it and opinion?
**************************
The one I am drinking is Lucozade orange original because that's the one you have when you're sick, is sold in a recyclable plastic bottle with a screw cap. I remember when I was little it came in a glass bottle and had a wrapper around it so you could twist this off and use it later in art projects oh those were the days.
The bottle is covered in all of the Lucozade logo and information about energy calories etc.
This is a carbonated drink with lots of small bubbles floating their way up the drink. The bubbles after the drink has a sat a while do get a lot smaller and you only then notice them on your tongue as you drink it.
The smell is very sweet and you can definitely smell the sugar. The smell is reminiscent to me of boiled sweets such as barley sugars.
The taste is a very sugary sweet synthetic orange by this I mean its orange as in orange squash not orange as the fruit would taste if that makes sense. It is certainly pleasant to drink just a lot more sugary than things I would drink normally.
Does it give me more energy and live up to its claims well it certainly is helping me stay awake and as I have drunk two glasses of this today I can certainly feel the sugar rush in my body. It has to be said it is giving my fingers and head a buzzy feeling but that is probably the effect of sugar and caffeine on an empty stomach. Whilst I know this won't cure me it definitely helps give me some much needed energy to do tasks around the house which will be useful when I pick up my toddler from nursery in a few hours.
Lucozade is not suitable for young children due to the high sugar levels and caffeine.
It can be used by diabetics for the emergency correction of hypoglycemia and for this reason it is often kept at work in the medicine cupboard and has been useful on the odd occasion to help patients
As I am drinking this because I am unwell I wondered what Lucozade the company have to say about drinking this and do they think it helps here's their answer
"Yes - Lucozade Energy can help you on the road to recovery. When you're ill your body often needs more energy than normal. You might prefer to get that energy from a drink when you're not feeling quite so clever. However, Lucozade Energy should not be taken as the only or major part of your diet for prolonged periods"
