THE MACALLAN even the name evokes a sense of hidden power. This is no ordinary malt whisky this is a King amongst them. It may not be to everybody’s taste but there can be no disputing the fact that this whisky is often awarded the top prizes when such things are judged. It is not a whisky that removes the top of your mouth with it’s taste, it is a mellow whisky that rewards the drinker with a pleasing aroma and taste that does not burn but leaves a feeling of contented well being in the mouth of the imbiber. From the Banks of the Spey to the cellars of Cata. It is an impressive journey but then again this is an impressive drink. What makes it different is the maturation in aged sherry casks something that used to be very common but now alas more and more of a dying art form. The sherry casks impart a delicate flavour to the finished article and imbue it with a light golden colour. Contrary to other opinions it is not a vastly expensive whisky unless you do go for the aged bottles. Macallan is one of the more famous Speyside scotches, which means it is distilled on the banks of the river Spey. It happens to be a very well balanced single malt, though not as much as Dalwhinnie. You will find that Macallan has a light gold color and a lasting finish. Its full and complex flavor is enhanced by aging in wooden sherry casks. The most common variety in stores now is the 15 year old, but Macallan also has 18 year old and 25 year old scotch.
