Advantages: One of the best whisky out there
Disadvantages: Empty bottle are so sad
From the Banks of the Spey to the cellars of Cata. It is an impressive journey but then again this is an impressive drink. What makes it different is the maturation in aged sherry casks something that used to be very common but now alas more and more of a dying art form. The sherry casks impart a delicate flavour to the finished article and imbue it with a light golden colour. Contrary to other opinions it is not a vastly expensive whisky unless you do go for the aged bottles. The standard Macallan has been aged for 10 years and it is this bottle that sits proudly on many a whisky drinkers’ shelf, alas often not for long as once opened the urge to have just one more wee taster becomes stronger and stronger. The cost? I have seen Macallan for as little as £17:50p although £22 would be closer to the average price. You can pay a lot more for the older whisky but unless you really want to push the boat out it is not a course I recommend. For those of you that like to be involved with the whisky you drink you can join a club and buy many whisky related items for delivery to your door, such as crystal tumblers, Macallan smoked Salmon and the iniquitous hat or luggy that the brand name wears. You also receive a quarterly newsletter that keeps you up to date on special offers and prize winning letters are rewarded with free bottle of the malt. As a drink it tends to the lighter side of whisky and is eminently drinkable without any of the burn that some malts leave behind. No trace of tar in this malt, it comes in a sensible bottle without the need for trendy green triangular bottles of one of its rivals. I would say for the un initiated that this is the best whisky to have in your cellar for that nightly tipple, it compares in flavour with the very best indeed the number of awards this whisky has won makes it one of the very best. How to drink it: Well I like a splash of water, a heinous crime to some but I believe itop
ens the whisky to the nose and pallet making it truly a king of drinks. Brandy lovers among you in blind taste test many people cannot tell this malt apart from brandy and it is a home produced option. Give it a whirl at your next after dinner session.Although it is a fine drink to have with smoke salmon, cheese etc. Earlier I mentioned the older whisky that is available from the club for a christmas gift I recieved a minature of a sixty year old malt. I underwent agonies as to when I should drink this gift. When I did finally celebrate with this precious nectar it was like drinking silk, it was so smooth I could have been tempted into parting with £155 to buy a full bottle but finaces and Binty made me see sense, however the memory lingers on and it is an experience I wish to partake of again one day. Soon I hope Binty :>)

- 09/10/01 A lovely whiskey. During the weekend I was camping in the Wye Valley in the rain and wind. We opened a bottle of Talisker, which is now my number one favourite - probably simply due to the circumstances under which it was drunk. Excellent op. |
