Advantages: Yummy coconut taste & smell
Disadvantages: Not so good if you don't like coconuts
Malibu is a sweet Caribbean Rum flavoured with natural coconut.
I was first introduced to Malibu Rum at my Sixth Form leavers ball. My best friend went to the bar and came back with coconut scented coca cola.
To be quite honest as coconut is one of my most loved smells, I would have been quite happy to sit and sniff my glass for the rest of the night but needs must and not wanting to be the strange girl smelling her drink. I took a sip (read gulp) and I was won over.
Malibu is made in the traditional spirit of Caribbean flavoured rums, apparently at a beach side distillery in Barbados.
I don't find the coconut taste or smell too over powering, and it goes well with a variety of mixers the most popular probably being Coca Cola. I personally prefer it mixed with fresh pineapple juice as too much Cola makes me feel sick - honestly it's not the alcohol!!
It's also quite nice with Lilt as a mixer, it can be served neat too.
I have tried a few supermarket cheap imitations of Malibu and none of them live up to my expectations so I've stopped bothering now, I'd rather spend a bit more and stick with the original.
To me Malibu doesn't really taste like it has alcohol in it, it doesn't have that strong alcoholic kick or burn that you get with most spirits. Which means that it can go down a little too easily... luckily for me I don't tend to get hangovers when I've been drinking Malibu.
Malibu Rum is 21% Alc/Vol 750ml.
It currently costs around £13 for 750ml or £18 for 1l
Summary: Get Your Island On and give it a try
