Advantages: only 99 calories per mug
Disadvantages: doesn't taste remotely like maltesers
I love Maltesers, always have done, something about the way the malty centre melts slowly on the tongue just gets me every time.
So when I saw a brightly coloured tub of this on offer at my corner shop, priced at £1.45, I decided to grab some and give it a go .
The packaging is not like the above picture, instead its more like a standard jar shape, only curved in halfway up the tub, rather like a nice curvy pair of hips. The Maltesers logo is clearly visible, tha label and the lid are bright red, and all the relevant nutritional info is there on the packet.
Opening the tub, removing the red lid and then the foil, I was greated with a puff of chocolate powder to the face . It didn't smell particularly Maltesery - it just smelt like ordinary hot chocolate. Not to worry, maybe the scent and flavour come out when its made .
Following the instructions, I stirred 5 heaped teaspoons (which seems like an awful lot, and make a fair dent in the tub) into some hot water, stirred it about, and waiting for comforting malty aromas to hit my nostrils . And waited. And waited .
Realising that no delicious maltiness was going to come that way, I took a big gulp - and was dissapointed . Don't get me wrong, its a passable hot chocolate, but ...where was the yummy Malteser taste . Not even a hint of it did I get . Not only that, but the chocolate seemed rather weak, meaning it would probably need more powder for a stronger taste, and with the amount you need to use anyway seeming rather large, each canister would only provide 10, maybe less drinks.
It wasn't disgusting, it wasn't even unpleasant - but nor was it what the packaging led me to believe it was. The one good thing I will say is that a cup, made up as directed, is only 99 calories .
Yes, I did finish off my jar of it, but no, I'm not satisfied, and I won't be buying it again. Next time I want something malty and yummy, I'll melt some dairy milk into a mug of Horlicks.
Summary: not worth the money
