Draught vs Bottled - - - - - - - - - - - - - There are differences between the draught and bottled versions of Pedigree, and whilst sharing the same basic flavour, both varieties have their own subtleties. Firstly, the draught comes in at 4.5% Vol, whilst bottled hits the 5% mark - not a massive difference in alcohol content, and not that noticeable when tasted side-by-side. Both v...more

Crowned Review Marston's Pedigree: The last of its kind (919 words)

Rating:

Pedigree is a unique beer, made by a method once widespread in the breweries of Burton-on-Trent. Indeed, once-upon-a-time the classic Bass was made this way. Marston’s alone now uses the union method of brewing and only for their Pedigree brand and even this is at risk. Marston’s is no longer an independent brewer. In 1999 it was gobbled up by the increasingly acquisitive Wolverhampton & Dudley Group. W&D itself has recently been under attack. A takeover attempt by failed by only a small percentage of votes. For the moment, Marston’s seems to have a reasonably secure future but the record over the years of acquired breweries is ...  Read the complete review

Normally when i'm in the pub of an evening, i'll stick to my regular tipple of Guinness - however, if i'm out-and-about at a drinking establishment during the daytime, i'll give one of the real ales a try. One of my favourite easy drinking brews is 'Marston's Pedigree'... don't get me wrong, i'm not often out drinking before nightfall - and I don't have a problem, OK!? Brewing Process - - - - - - - - - - - Pedigree is fairly unique in the sense that it is still made in a traditional way - brewed in the oak casks of the Burton Unions in an attempt to preserve its unique character and consistent quality. This process is apparently quite labour ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Marston's Pedigree: A beer with a fine PEDIGREE (212 words)
by - written on 18/05/01 (Useful, 75 readings)

Pedigree from Marstons has a fine reputation amongst beer drinkers, and is well known throughout the country, so finding a pint in a pub near you shouldn't be too much of a problem. Brewed in Staffordshire that beer is also available in cans and bottles - the bottles are particularly welcome as they serve up a full pint rather than the woefully short 500ml of most bottled beers these days. Full marks to Pedigree there! The beer itself is a wonderful caramel brown colour, with a gentle fizz (not over the top). Pedigree suffers from none of the pretentious tastes that some real ales do, neither is it just a beer with a fancy name. It has a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pedigree in question (158 words)

When kept well and of good delivered quality Marstons Pedigree is a fine pint. However, I feel this is one of those beers which has suffered from overmarketing and excessive market and geographic penetration! We have had it as a guest ale in our rugby club and our steward managed to produce an acceptable pint for most of the time - but not all of the time. Our margins were eaten into by significantly higher wastage than other real ales - more needed to be drawn off. Delivered quality from the brewery was also a problem with smone barrels returned - our supply was via Carlsberg-Tetley. All in all it seems a difficult beer to keep well and to serve a consistent quality ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Marston's Pedigree: A first class Pedigree (110 words)
by - written on 01/04/01 (Useful, 79 readings)

Marstons Pedigree Bitter is truly a beer drinker’s beer. Brewed in Burton on Trent using the traditional Burton Union Sets as opposed to stainless steel vats gives “Pedi” its unique flavour. The head should cling to the glass and remain throughout the pint. It is very moreish and has a pleasant flavour not being too bitter to the palate. However it is easily spoilt by being kept incorrectly or served through “dirty” pipes and this effect is easily noticeable as a bad pint is very bad. No compromise can be made with this drink but when served and kept correctly will have you coming back for more. ...  Read the complete review
