Marston's Pedigree ... is a unique beer, made by a method once widespread in the breweries of Burton-on-Trent. Indeed, once-upon-a-time the classic Bass was made this way. Marston’s alone now uses the union method of brewing and only for their Pedigree brand and even this is at risk. Marston’s is no longer an independent brewer. In 1999 it was gobbled up by the increasingly acquisitive Wolverhampton & Dudley Group. W&D itself has recently been under attack. A takeover attempt by failed by only a small percentage of votes. For the moment, Marston’s seems to have a reasonably secure future but the record over the years of acquired breweries is not good. T... Read the full review: The last of its kind by grahamt |

Marstons Owd Roger ... you thought 5.6 or 6.0% abv was strong for beer, think again: Owd Roger comes in at 7.6%, which is as strong as a good scrumpy cider. So the apparently high price of £1.99 for a half-litre bottle works out at more alcohol per p than most bottled beers! Definitely NOT a case of "one for the road"! This one's not bottle conditioned, but does not have an excessive amount of artificial fizz. The appearance is dark, though not as dark as stout. The flavour is moderately strong, quite full-bodied, rather sweet and also fairly bitter. (I'm no good at the wine-writers' comparisons - if you want to know if it tastes like mistletoe or old socks or peanut... Read the full review: Mind how you go! by cpipe |

Marstons Oyster Stout ... Stout? A stout made with oysters? Fear not, this stout isn't made with oysters, but is designed to be drunk with oysters. I know it sounds strange, but believe me, it is the most wonderfully different and refreshing beer you could have dreamt of, without being a complete novelty that you only try once. Made by Martsons, the great brewers who bring us Pedigree, this stout comes in a decidedly nautically thememed bottle. Being 4.5% volume and sold in 500ml bottles, this unusual drink is difficult to find in some supermarkets - I tend to buy it in the local off-licence instead. When you pour the drink, you get a wonderful 'fresh se air' aroma fro... Read the full review: Aphrodisiac beer? Oyster stout darling?!? by charliebrown |
