Advantages: none
Disadvantages: disgusting
I remember at time when Nescafe was the height of coffee sophistication and Maxwell house was the second choice. Times have changed, although we are not as sophisticated as our European neighbours when it comes to coffee choices we still have a massive choice of decent coffee available in the supermarket.
I wouldn't normally consider buying Maxwell House, I love Kenco coffee these days but Tesco were giving away free jars last week when you spent over £30. I had a feeling I wouldn't like it but never one to pass up a freebie I grabbed a jar and took it home.
I almost ran out of coffee last night. I had only a couple of spoonfuls left of my lovely Kenco coffee and I needed to make sure I had a decent coffee fix for the morning so I cracked open my jar or Maxwell House. It looks like any other jar of coffee except that this has a blue lid and label.
I had a look in Tesco when I was buying a jar of decent coffee today to see how much Maxwell House cost and they dont even sell it in my local Tesco which is a huge store.
I made my coffee in the usual way. This didnt smell like good coffee, its very hard to describe the smell but it had that distinct whiff of cheap coffee.
The taste is the most important part. It was vile, truly utterly horrible. It didn't have a thin bitter taste like Nescafe but a slightly more rounded flavour. It most certainly wasnt rich like they describe it on the jar but had that distinct taste of cheap, nasty coffee. I only managed half my cup before I tipped the rest down the sink. I remember for a year when I was utterly skint I bough ASDA smart price coffee and this was on a par to that in quality terms.
So now I'm left with a dilemma, what do do with the rest of the jar. I hate wasting things so would feel too guilty if I threw it out. I can't think of anyone I dislike enough to palm it off on so it will need to stay at the back of the cupboard reminding me that I am too spoilt and self indulgent to drink cheap coffee while others are starving in the world. I can also feel crap about the fact that some poor coffee farmer worked his socks off for a pittance producing the coffee to go into my jar and then it was transported thousands of miles using up the earths resources only for me to waste it. Great, a guilt trip in a jar.
Summary: a guilt trip in a jar.

- 26/08/08 This coffee is horrible. I even find that Tesco value coffee is better then it. |
