Advantages: Delicious, good value, mild taste..
Disadvantages: None for me...
I have always been a big coffee drinker. Instant, ground, cappuccino, I'm not fussy really. The only stipulation I have when it does come to coffee is that it mustn't be too strong, and must be quite milky. This is because I find overly-strongly tasting coffee is a bit over-powering for my own particular tastes.
This fact alone brings me to tell you about Mellow Bird's. This brand of coffee has been available for as long as I can remember really. Widely available in all good grocery stores and supermarkets, the brand is instantly recognisable with its bright blue coloured lid and labelling to the front of the jar.
The coffee is quite commonly sold in 100g jars, although I am pretty sure there used to be a larger jar available too. I have not seen said larger jar on my supermarket shelf for quite some time though, so please don't quote me on this!
Anyway, Mellow Bird's main marketing 'angle' is that the coffee is MILD. Much, much milder than say fresh, ground coffee and in my opinion Mellow Bird's is also much milder than other brands of instant coffee too.
The coffee itself is different in appearance to other brands because it is much more fine in texture than say a coffee with 'granules'. I do regularly buy a brand of 'granule' type coffee too, but the Mellow Bird's coffee on the other hand is more like a fine powder.
The little bit of 'blurb' on the reverse of the packaging sums it up quite nicely when stating "Your Mellow Bird's coffee beans have been carefully selected and mellow roasted for a delicious mild taste".
The Mellow Bird's company is manufactured by Kraft, the same company that makes cheeses and other foodstuffs. There is no nutritional information on the packaging, label or jar itself.
What I find with Mellow Bird's is that there is no chance at all that I have accidentally made the coffee too over-powering or strong when I have prepared it. I do find that this is just not possible with this brand. That said though, I do find that the taste is quite delicious and just as satisfying as any other brand that I buy on a regular basis.
My partner - who likes his coffee much stronger than I like mine - does drink Mellow Bird's on occasion and he has actually commented that the taste of the Mellow Bird's coffee is much more pleasant than our other usual brand. I would have to wholeheartedly agree with him on that point, although I do really enjoy the milder- tasting aspect from Mellow Bird's too.
The coffee is quite 'light' although it is not tasteless. I do find that the taste is very satisfying and that it is just the right blend for my own taste buds. I do find every cup of the stuff makes me want another! I particularly like drinking the coffee in the winter time as I do find there is something soothing and almost comfortable about the brand and the coffee.
Another important point to note is that there is no residue from the actual coffee powder when drinking Mellow Bird's. I have found that this is a problem in the past with other brands of powdered instant coffee but I have never found this to be evident with Mellow Bird's.
All in all I would highly recommend this coffee, particularly if you are like me, and don't particularly enjoy having your socks blown off by a huge burst of dark, strong coffee every morning. I like my coffee to 'compliment' my morning, not scream in its ear, after all!
I bought my 100g jar of Mellow Bird's coffee this week in my local Asda supermarket, who was actually running a promotion on the coffee at the time. I managed to buy two of these 100g jars for £3. The individual price of the jars is £1.88.
I am going to award the Mellow Bird's coffee full marks because I would really recommend giving it a try and I really enjoy it thoroughly. I cannot fault anything about it and will continue to buy it for years to come!
Summary: A mellow-tasting coffee!
