Merlot in general ... to taste sweet even when fermented to dry. This makes it a good blender and so is often used to soften wines. Merlot is regularly blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to fill the gap in its middle palate .

This is what makes a wine dry, or bitter. Having previously written about Beaujolais, which is in my opinion an excellent starting point for getting into drinking red wine, I have decided to take it one step further. If anyone is trusting enough (some might call this foolish enough!) to trust me and try the beaujolais nouveau, then they might also consider trying the merlot. It is slightly more full bodied than the Beaujolais, but without being as over powering as some of the big Bordeaux's, or a chateauneuf-du-pape. When I'm in a supermarket, looking for a cheap red, I know that any Merlot will be fine. It's just to my taste. I wouldn't say that this one's a light wine, it's got some texture, and strength, but isn't by any means as thick and overpowering as a Bordeaux would be. The last bottle I had tasted particularly "oaky" which, of course, depends on the wine maker's style. The bottle you buy may never have gone near an oak barrel in it's life.
